Pregnant and night shifts

Hi everyone, I'm 7 weeks pregnant now. I've been feeling really tired, nauseous, and getting stomach cramps every time for a few weeks already. I work in healthcare (lots of standing and heavy lifting), and I'm currently doing 2 night shifts each week, which are really taking a toll on me. I want to wait until after 12 weeks to tell people I'm pregnant, but it's tough holding out through the nights like this. I hope I won't have to work those shifts anymore after the 12 weeks... Does anyone have experience with this? I'd love to hear how other women cope with it and if this is a common experience. Lots of love and a happy pregnancy to you all!

    Hi Roosje,
I have exactly the same story. I also work in healthcare and couldn't handle the night shifts anymore. After 3 months it's not officially required anymore, but I really couldn't wait that long. I went to my team leader and told her. It's not different, but there was understanding for my situation and I didn't have to work nights anymore. I couldn't take it anymore, I was so nauseous, and it's also very unhealthy for you. Already normal, but now completely. I would still inform your team leader and trust that she'll keep it confidential. Otherwise, you're putting yourself at risk, and if your body is already showing signs, I'd be very careful! Warm regards from Wendy

Hi Wendy, thanks for your reply. Yeah, I think I'll go ahead and do that.

The moment you tell your employer, they are required to protect you from harmful work influences. So then you can work a bit more regularly. On the government website, you'll find your rights and responsibilities regarding work and pregnancy.
