Almost 38 and unexpectedly pregnant

Hi everyone. I'm new here. I found out this morning that I'm pregnant. I already have 2 kids, almost 16 and 10. So this morning I found out I'm pregnant with my partner, whom I've been with for 6 years. 5 years ago we wanted a baby. That resulted in 1 pregnancy, which ended very early in a miscarriage. So early that I didn't even realize I was pregnant. But now, unexpectedly, I'm pregnant again. We were both really shocked by this news because we didn't expect me to get pregnant anymore since we've been having sex without contraception for 5 years. You'd think it would happen, but if you don't get pregnant in those 5 years, you don't really expect it to happen anymore. No one else knows yet; we want to let it sink in a bit first.

Shocked and happy or just shocked? Weird, right? You've been having regular sex for five years and don't get pregnant, and then suddenly you do! Congratulations!

We're not really sure how exactly we were startled. My partner has reduced fertility, so when you suddenly get a spontaneous pregnancy after 5 years, even though you had already accepted that chapter of your life was closed, it's quite a shock.

Congratulations, what a beautiful miracle! Congratulations again!

Congratulations! I can imagine that was quite a shock. I'm turning 37. I have a son who's almost 14 and a daughter who's 11 from a previous marriage. My partner and I would really like to have another child together. I did have to think about it for a bit, especially with two teenagers at home and my age. I was also worried that it wouldn't be easy to conceive. I'm now in round two. It'll take some getting used to, but I wish you all the best!

Skullie, how do you time that with sex when you've two teenagers in the house? Do you still have any privacy?

Marc, that's no problem. My kids know that we still want another baby. My daughter now says every night before bed that we shouldn't make too much noise, hehe. We're pretty open about it, which is the advantage of having teenagers. They know they can't just barge into the bedroom at night.

Haha, good to hear that! It'll probably be different with toddlers!

Marc, my friend has a 5-year-old kid, and since that doesn't happen very often, his ex lives quite far away. They've taught him to call out if something's wrong and not just barge into the bedroom.

Well brought up! Haven't had any awkward situations yet, right? How does it feel to be pregnant now, really?

That's so lovely, congratulations! I also found out completely unexpectedly at 37... one day after my last smear test, when I had already had my period (so I thought I was clear). I hadn't taken the pill for two months because after the result of my last smear test, I wanted to get an IUD and get the hormones out of my body. We already have 2 kids, aged 11 and 8... so it's quite a shift. I'm now 22 weeks and we really see it as a little gift... still a lot of disbelief... but it's double the joy, especially because the other kids are fully aware and super excited... By the way, we didn't do a combined test because of my age, since there's an increased risk anyway... I didn't want all that stress...

You're right, Bianca; you only get a probability calculation back! Congratulations!

Hi everyone, here I am on Wednesday with a positive test in hand. So surprised! I'm 37 and already have two kids, 6 and almost 8. It's quite nerve-wracking, especially given my age. I'm getting used to the idea now and really looking forward to it! I have my intake and first ultrasound on April 12. Greetings!

I'm 44 and accidentally got pregnant again last November. I was absolutely shocked, didn't expect that to still be possible. We'd only had sex once that month, and not during my fertile window either. We weren't using any contraception, but I thought getting pregnant at my age wouldn't be that easy anymore... Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks, but we've decided to try again now. So we're just waiting to see if it works out... If it doesn't happen, that's okay too. My oldest is 22 and my youngest is 12... but it would be very welcome!

Had the second ultrasound today. Got quite a shock. The nuchal fold didn't look quite right. Not super thick, but it stretches from the neck all the way down to the tailbone. I've been referred to an OB/GYN for an extra scan. It could be nothing, but the midwife wants them to take a closer look. Still, it's a scare. Otherwise, the baby was growing really well and was super active!

Got a call from the hospital today. We have an appointment on Friday. Just waiting to see what happens. The uncertainty is killing me...
