Nuchal translucency measurement? Yes or no?

Hi everyone,

I'm faced with the decision of whether or not to have a nuchal translucency scan.
I'm 37 years old, and they say I have an increased risk.
What's your take on this?
Do you get this scan or not?

Are there any women who have already had it or are planning to soon?

Best,
Brenda

We’ve had it done for all our pregnancies (I was 23 for the first one).
Now I’m pregnant again, and if everything goes well, we’ll have it done again (I’m 36 now).
We’d really like to know where things stand, as much as possible.
    Good luck with your choice!

I think I'm in the same boat.
I don't want to be caught off guard. My boyfriend would rather not know because he's afraid of how he'll react...
It's really not easy, but we shouldn't let ourselves get too scared either...
    Thanks for your response! :-)

I didn't have it done for my first two pregnancies. I was 27 and 29 then, and now with the third, I'm 36. The main reason was that I felt obligated to my other children to rule out any serious chromosomal abnormalities that could result in a life expectancy of less than one year. It wasn't about Down syndrome for me; that wouldn't have been a reason to terminate the pregnancy. But the other conditions were. I didn't want my children to go through the grief of having a seriously ill sibling when it's relatively easy to rule out.

It doesn't guarantee a healthy baby, but I feel like we've done everything possible now.

Good luck with your decision. It's very personal.

We have a nuchal translucency scan on January 13th. I'm 25 and my boyfriend is 31, so no increased risk. Still, I find it nice to know where we stand, even though I don't think I'd terminate the pregnancy anytime soon.
