Distance from home to hospital

Lot
Hi,

It looks like our son is going to be born early (shortened cervix).
We're currently thinking about the distance. Since my wife has to stay in the hospital (Leuven), I'm commuting 150km daily (round trip), which is no problem at all, but we'd prefer to stay closer to the hospital once he's born.
UZ Leuven has a family accommodation, but it costs 10 euros per night per person. If we assume our son will stay for a month, that's 600 euros, which is quite a sum. We're now looking around for other, cheaper options.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? We can't imagine being so far away from him. If something were to happen, I fear we wouldn't feel at ease.
Does anyone have an idea or tip?
Thanks!

You could contact your health insurer to see if you can get some reimbursement. And maybe check if you can get some money back through your tax return. I think there's a deduction for medical expenses, but you'd need to check if that's still the case and if this qualifies.

    Hey
I also know here that I have to give birth in Leuven... my boyfriend has to drive 140 km each time...
I'm a bit scared about what's coming... the baby will need to be operated on right away, I don't know how long that will take, when I can hold my baby, etc... ????

You should definitely talk to your health insurance provider.
My husband had to travel 4 hours every day to get to us and stayed at the Ronald McDonald House, which was eventually covered.

I already know my baby will have to stay in the hospital for 3-4 weeks. So it's going to be a tough period, but I'll be happy when the baby can go home by summer.

I totally get that—it's a rough time. Here, one of 27 weeks and 11 weeks in the hospital, blah blah, but anyway, things are going super well with him now.

I don't know what to do, honestly... I know the baby is going to be born too early and will need immediate surgery, but I'm not ready for that yet... but it has to happen... pffff
