Baby is 3 weeks behind on growth

Hi!
I was rushed to the OB on Tuesday because the baby was thought to be too small.
They did an ultrasound right away and the legs and tummy measured 29.4 weeks, while I'm already 32.2 weeks. The head was measuring fine though. My placenta and cord are working well. The baby is now estimated at 1500 grams. Tomorrow I have a detailed scan (20 weeks) to rule out anything being missed regarding the head. I've already had 5 growth scans and they always checked the baby thoroughly and everything was always fine. They also took a blood sample to check if I have an infection that might be affecting the baby. I went on leave immediately and have to rest completely. Has anyone else experienced this? And how was the baby born? The baby is already fully engaged. This is my 2nd pregnancy, the first one went well. Best, Kristel

With mine, she was also about three weeks behind schedule at that same stage. I stayed under the care of my OB-GYN, and three weeks later, she was still a bit behind. During my pregnancy, I had a lot of stress and high blood pressure, which probably had a lot to do with it. Because she was so small and I was at risk for pregnancy-induced hypertension, I spent a lot of time in the hospital during the last few weeks. I was induced at 37.3 weeks (she was estimated to weigh 2600 grams at the time), and after two days of contractions, they couldn't find her heartbeat anymore, so I had an emergency C-section. She weighed only 2100 grams. She spent a few days in the incubator and was in the hospital for a total of ten days. Despite being small at birth, she was otherwise perfectly healthy. Within a month, I remember, she already weighed 3100 grams.

Hi Kristel, I went through that too last year. I was referred to the hospital for my 30-week check-up. The baby also had a growth delay of 3 weeks. In my case, it turned out that my umbilical cord was starting to malfunction. I was monitored closely until the induction, and our baby was born at 39 weeks (induced). She was small but sweet and healthy, and even weighed more than expected: 2480g. I think your baby will be fine as long as there's no medical reason for it. Best wishes, Maya

Thanks for your replies! I'm now 38 weeks pregnant and they estimate her weight at 2500 grams! Everything looked good with me, they say small but fine. I'm curious! Love, Kristel

I was induced at 38 weeks because of a (too) small baby.

She was 43cm and 2500 grams but completely healthy though. They could go home the next day already. Now pregnant with the 2nd and so far also at the lower end regarding growth.

Sometimes they miss the mark too (just don't get false hope atm): mine were 'only' a full kilo off. Unfortunately in the other direction: estimated at 3.8 kg and she weighed a full kilo less: very small and fine though. It doesn't have to be a problem per se: a friend of mine had a daughter of 45 cm and about 3 kg (three weeks early) and she's now a super healthy girl of almost 2!
