How do you ask for part-time work?

Hi,
How did you bring up the topic with your employer that you want to work fewer hours?
First with your manager and then with HR?
I'm actually afraid they'll make it difficult. More people, including men, who worked part-time had to work more again a few years back. I also think they'll push back if I'm allowed to work, say, 3 days.

I'd bring it up with your manager to start with, and then the ball will roll on its own
