Red blood loss... Help!

Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious panic attack
I'm currently 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I just lost some bright red blood. No clots, no mucus. I also don't really have any stomach pain. Just a bit of an annoying feeling in my lower abdomen. It was about a spot of blood with a diameter of 5 cm in my underwear (sorry TMI, but it gives you an idea of the amount)

But I'm so scared that this is the start of a miscarriage...
Pff, I feel absolutely terrible right now... Next Friday I have an appointment with the gynecologist, but that feels so far away!

Does anyone know what this could be?

Love,
Trienie

    Hi girls,

Unfortunately, my miscarriage started like this. I had some bleeding around 8 am, about the same amount as you. By 6 pm it became intense and I lost a little baby. I didn’t have any stomach pain either.

But in 50% of cases it can also be harmless. Maybe you could call your midwife? She’ll ask you some questions.

Sending strength and lots of love.

    Hey MamaNaoufie,

That's so sad that you had a miscarriage

I'm not really happy to read this, but it's reality... So far, I haven't bled anymore (just a tiny bit of brown discharge). I'm going to wait a bit more today and then I'll contact the midwife tomorrow.

    Pff, scary moments...

    Love!

Hi Trienie, first of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! Here's both a negative and a positive story about bleeding early in pregnancy...

In my first pregnancy, I started bleeding at 5.5 weeks. It began brownish and light, but got redder and heavier, and at 6.5 weeks I got a heavy period-like feeling and ended up having a miscarriage.

In my second pregnancy (right after that), I started bleeding again at 6.5 weeks, bright red this time, with my underwear soaked, so I thought it was over again... This time, there was a hematoma in my uterus (a blood clot), which luckily wasn't harmful. I also had a sensitive cervix throughout the second pregnancy, which made blood vessels burst easily. Our daughter is now over 5 weeks old

As you can see, it can really go either way, and unfortunately, you can only wait and see! I'd definitely call the clinic tomorrow, maybe you can get help even earlier

I'm rooting for you that everything goes well! ? Good luck with waiting, and let me know how it turns out?

    Hi Suuske,

Thanks for your reply! And congratulations on your 5-week-old little sprout!

Yes, I've heard several times now that bleeding can go either way. It's really a 50-50 chance whether things will turn out okay or not. It's definitely a scary wait-and-see situation right now...

By the way, I just called the midwife. I was supposed to go there on Friday anyway, so that appointment can stay. If I start losing more blood (like during a period), I need to go for an emergency consultation. I'm also really glad they were so friendly and understanding on the phone! I was a bit scared of that...

For now, I'm not bleeding anymore. Only yesterday I had some brown discharge (when wiping). Hopefully it stays like this.

If there's any more news, I'll definitely let you know!

    Love!

Oh yes, that insecurity sounds so frustrating! Go enjoy the beautiful weather a bit and hopefully everything will work out fine! Big hug

Here’s the same story as Suuske.

At 10 weeks pregnant, I started losing brown blood, which kept increasing, and I also stopped feeling pregnant. The ultrasound was very clear too. I miscarried at 11 weeks.

Then I got pregnant again right after, but this time it’s even a twin pregnancy. Around 8 weeks, the blood started flowing again, which made me a bit scared. But I didn’t feel like something was wrong. I had a hematoma in the uterus, but I could handle it. I had to take a thick month off to rest so there wouldn’t be any pressure, so the bleeding wouldn’t affect my babies.

I’m now 16 weeks pregnant, and the bleeding really stopped 3 weeks ago (though I still lost some old blood often), and my babies are doing absolutely great.

So girls, anything can happen, and I’m hoping for the best. Xxx

Hi Trienie, these kinds of moments are so unpleasant. I also had bleeding in the first few weeks, and I’m now 23 weeks pregnant with an active baby. The first few weeks I felt so unsure. I found out that I started bleeding when I had to sneeze really hard or lift heavier things. At one point, I stopped lifting anything at all, and the bleeding quickly stopped. So it could be that a blood vessel burst due to the pressure. Hopefully, you can find some distraction and everything will be okay!
  10. Suuske #11

What Mimie30 said, I had that throughout my whole pregnancy. At the slightest thing, a blood vessel would burst again and I'd have bleeding again. Sneezing (nice with hay fever...), coughing, lifting the nieces who are 2.5 years old, carrying heavy shopping bags, busy day at work, etc.

Thank you for your congratulations, Trienie! And glad the doctor took you seriously! Hopefully, an emergency consultation isn't needed and everything will be fine on Friday!

FHra, what sad about your mc and congratulations on your twin pregnancy! Glad everything is going well now and hopefully the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly!

Mimie30, congratulations on your pregnancy too and take it easy! Especially if you notice that's good for the bleeding

Trienie, good luck with waiting, try to find distractions!

Thank you for sharing your experiences with me, dears.

@FHra: So sorry to hear about your miscarriage Glad you got pregnant again so quickly! And with twins no less! Huge congratulations!
Every pregnancy is indeed so different... It's actually quite intense. Anyway, it's really nice to hear that your little ones are doing well!
And I can indeed do nothing more than hope for the best (and fear the worst) at this moment.

@Mimie30: Huge congratulations to you too! Glad everything is going well with your baby.
For me, the bleeding started after I lifted heavy shopping bags out of the car. We were also renovating and had moved a lot of heavy stuff the day before. Plus, I work with people with disabilities, so I have to lift and carry quite often. So yes, maybe it has something to do with that? I hope so though! If it turns out to be the case, I'll ask my boss if it's better if I stop working (but for now, they don't know anything at work because I wanted to wait for my first ultrasound).
Fortunately, I have a busy week ahead, but of course, it's always "lurking" in the background.

@Suuske: I'll definitely keep you updated on how things progress! x

Today I haven't bled anymore (for now) (no brown discharge either). I do have period-like cramps (which I hope won't get worse) and a lot of white discharge. Oh dear, these kinds of things are way too stressful. My heart can't handle it so well! Help!

    Thanks ladies!

Stay calm, girl, I know how hard it is. Do you have an ultrasound on Friday? And how far along are you then?

And congratulations to Suuske on your little miracle!
  13. trienie started this #14

    Hi FHra,

Actually, I should be 7.5 weeks along on Friday, but given my long cycles, I’m probably only 6.5 weeks. So not that far along yet. Normally, the first ultrasound (internal) is done at 7 weeks (I don’t know if there’s a difference between the Netherlands and Belgium?). I’m from Belgium. So there’s a chance there’s not much to see yet. But hopefully, there’s at least "something," or something that can give me a bit more clarity. If nothing is visible, I can go back the following week. So that’s nice.
  14. FHra #15

I also had an ultrasound for the second time at 7 weeks, and the little hearts were clearly visible.

Wishing you all the best for Friday, hope you'll see something then. Keep us posted! xxxx
  15. trienie started this #16

Oh nice, FHra! Now I'm hoping even more that we'll see something on Friday!
I'll definitely keep you posted! xxx
  16. Mamna32 #17

Thanks Trienie. Hearing you talk about heavy lifting, it sounds just like how it was for me in the early stages of my pregnancy. I understand why you don't want to tell your employer yet. Makes sense that you want to keep it to yourself for now. Glad it's almost Friday and you'll know more then!

Thank you Suuske, I definitely took it easy and luckily it went away at some point . Glad it's going well now FHra. That sounds so special, a twin. Super cool. Congratulations!
  17. Suuske #18

Had the first ultrasound here too, at 7 weeks (also transvaginal), and saw a beautiful beating heart

Good luck today with the ultrasound, Trienie! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a beautiful beating heart!

    Hi everyone!

Good news! I just got back from the OB-GYN... I'm officially 6 weeks and 3 days along, and they could see a nice little heartbeat on the ultrasound

I'm absolutely over the moon! I had already braced myself for the worst... And of course I know it's still very early and a lot can still go wrong, but for now I feel really great!

Thank you all so much for your support!

    Big kiss!
  19. Suuske #20

What great news, Trienie! Congratulations! Enjoy your beautiful ultrasound, and I hope you have a very prosperous pregnancy!
