your hips during pregnancy

Ladies, I have a question.
Do you have experience with your hips becoming slightly wider than before pregnancy? And if so... do you know if that widening is really the bone growing or the extra fat/fluid that comes on quite quickly? Sorry, maybe a weird question, but I'm curious if you can get your "old hips" back after giving birth with lots of exercise, since I'm wondering whether it's the bone growing or just extra fat that you've gained on your hips. My hip circumference has always been 94cm and now it's probably around 96cm... And I'm only halfway through! Yet I've only gained 3.5-4.5 kg, which isn't even that much! I'd love to hear your experiences regarding hip circumference changes and whether you know if it's bone (and irreversible) or extra fat/fluid. Of course, you get something beautiful in return, but I'd still really like to get my old figure back after giving birth (not immediately after, of course, I understand it can take half a year to a year). Thank you!!! Katie

    Hi Katie,

I never quite got my old figure back. After my first, it was more or less okay, but after the second, I really ended up with wider hips.

Hi Sylvia, thanks for your reply. But do you know if it's "fat" or if it's really the bone that's getting wider? Sorry for the weird question, but I find it nice to know. Thanks.

I think my bones have spread out a bit more after giving birth. I did lose the baby weight though.

I went from 85cm to 93cm around my hip bones, but a bit of that is also from my lower belly.
I've only gained 2 kilos and I'm 21 weeks now (almost halfway).
So it's not as bad for you, right!!

I can't imagine your bones are growing!! That must be fluid.
Everything you gain purely from the pregnancy will go away.
It's the extra body weight you gain yourself that's hard to lose!

    But do look that up!!

Your pubic bone doesn't grow either, but rather moves further apart, I think. The ligaments that hold your pelvis together loosen up, creating more space for the baby. After birth, it usually tightens back up, but sometimes it doesn't fully return to its original state, as far as I understand.

You're right, Sietske. I can only find that women's pelvises can shift out of place due to that stretching and pulling, and (temporarily!!!) grow apart.
And as far as width goes, it's fat and fluid. So it's just as different for everyone as the weight gain... and usually disappears again.

Don't worry, everything will be fine!!!

Hi Olivia Anna, and Sietske, thanks for your replies.
I’ve always felt my hips were just right, really—no need to lose 1 cm, but also definitely no need to gain any. I’d love to get back to my normal waist size after pregnancy, but I’m a bit worried because I’ve read so many stories about bones growing and never being the same as before. I’d really like to stay between 90–95 cm!

    Hi Katie,

Don't stress about it, there's not much you can do anyway. The fat and fluid will go away, and if you end up with a slightly different figure, you can wear it with pride!

    hey ladies

your body produces the relaxin hormone, which makes your bones and joints softer so the baby can pass through your pelvis during birth.. this can indeed cause your hips to not return to their normal position like before pregnancy!

For me, the pregnancy isn't just showing on my belly, but also on my hips/buttocks/upper thighs (fat tissue).
That was the case with my first too, but it was completely gone after 4 months...

I'm only three months pregnant and already my hips are all messed up, nothing's sitting right anymore. It's also my first baby, and you know why you're doing it, but when I look in the mirror, I'm so frustrated. I've already bumped my knee three times today, and now my hips are acting up too, hahaha. Yeah, it's going suprrrrrr ????

Hi Katie, I never had my hips change much after my pregnancies. I didn't really gain much weight either. I always had an hourglass figure, which I don't have anymore after 2 pregnancies, but I didn't get more fat or wider hips. For me, it was mostly my breasts that became fuller and stayed that way, even though I breastfed twice. Actually, I got fuller in all the right places My husband is happy about that too. Greetings, Madelene
