long rules still baby?

Hi!

I was wondering something. I've been on my period for 1 week and 5 days now, and it's quite heavy. I'm wondering if there's still a chance I could be pregnant.

They say theoretically, ovulation happens 2 weeks after the first day of your period. But now I'm wondering: if you've had your period the whole time, is the uterine lining thick enough for the egg to implant? And can you be pregnant while still having your period?

Has anyone experienced this?

Hi Liesje, did you just stop taking the pill (or another hormonal contraceptive) and do you normally have a regular cycle? Your ovulation is on average 14 days before the first day of your next period, so not after the previous one... with a regular 28-day cycle this is the same, otherwise it's not!
When I had just stopped taking the pill, I also had a long period (about 2 weeks) after the second one, but the next cycle my ovulation was later, so my cycle, counted from the first day of that long period, was 41 days. So my ovulation was well after my period
With such a heavy period, I don't think you'd be pregnant right now..
You could try tracking your ovulation with ovulation tests? At Action you get good, cheap tests (5 for €2.50). Or maybe you feel your ovulation? I wouldn't stress too much about trying and just have fun with your boyfriend/husband again once your period is over!

I've been off the pill since April.
For those two months, I had a normal 28-day cycle.
I also think I'm probably not pregnant yet, but I was just wondering if it's still possible to get pregnant this month. Because if ovulation happens during my period or right after, it can't be fertilized or implant.

Thanks anyway for the explanation. It's a wait-and-see situation anyway, but I'm totally fed up and hope my period starts now.

Oh, I totally relate to that, Liesje! I thought to myself then, "pff, will this bleeding ever end?!"

I had a nice cycle of 27 days the first month after it stopped, then one of 23 days, followed by that very long period and a cycle of 41 days...

I hope the bleeding stops soon and that you get pregnant soon!

As long as you're still having periods, no egg is released. The egg only starts developing after your period ends. Whether your cycle is 21 days or 53 days long, ovulation will occur about 14 days before your next period. So, in the upcoming cycle, you have just as much chance of getting pregnant as usual. I hope your cycles become regular soon, though it might take a while. For some women, it can take up to a year, so don't worry too much too quickly.

That shouldn't really matter, long cycle.
It shouldn't get in the way of your ovulation or your chances of getting pregnant.
My own mom always had long cycles and even
once went a year without a period.
But she still got pregnant three times.
