6 weeks pregnant, very painful intestines

Hi everyone,

I'm almost 6 weeks pregnant now but have had terrible bowel pain for almost 2 weeks, especially at night. I've always had issues (I used to go to the toilet up to 5 times a day), but now it's really difficult and extremely painful—I sometimes just end up crying on the toilet from the pain. I wake up at least twice every night and have to sit on the toilet, and the pain subsides after about 20 minutes, whether or not I've had a bowel movement. My gynecologist prescribed me a syrup to help soften things up, but when I take it, I'm on the toilet all day and night, and it's basically watery.

Does anyone else have or have had these symptoms? I'm not nauseous or anything else.

Hi, I had these symptoms too. At one point, the pain was so bad I thought my labor had started, so I was admitted to the hospital for observation at 26 weeks. It turned out to be severe constipation. Sometimes I couldn't go to the toilet for a whole week. I got two enemas in the hospital, but that didn't help at all. Eventually, I got Macrogol and electrolyte powder that you have to mix with water. At first, I had 4 sachets a day, and then it finally worked. It took about 3 weeks in total for my bowel movements to return to normal and for the pain to go away. I was walking bent over for 3 weeks and couldn't move much, because those sachets work well, but they also hit hard hahaha, so you have to drink a lot and 10 minutes later I was on the toilet. Always small amounts, but hey, it worked. Hope this helps you a bit. I also had that lactulose syrup, but that gave me even more pain. Strength.

Drink lots of water and milk... it's really helping me now. I already had issues with my intestines before pregnancy, and it's not less, but worse... hopefully it gets less for you too, but try drinking water and milk....

Thank you all for your response!

Because I had so much pain for 2 weeks already, they initially thought it might be an ectopic pregnancy. I had my third ultrasound this morning, and luckily everything looks good. She sees two gestational sacs, each with a baby inside. She says this happens more often, but I shouldn't assume it's twins yet since I'm just under 6 weeks, so they can't see heartbeats yet. I have to go back to the hospital in 2 weeks, and hopefully, they'll hear the heartbeat(s) then. So it's all very exciting.

The gynecologist did say that the pain could be explained by my uterus growing faster, which means I might feel more intense pain than usual.

    Greetings

    Hi ano1984,

I'm also about 6 weeks pregnant now. Luckily, there was no ectopic pregnancy!
My bowel habits were also slightly more frequent than usual before I got pregnant. Even from the very early stages of pregnancy, I sometimes experience constipation: sometimes skipping a day or two and feeling the urge without success.
I eat prunes occasionally (yuck, gross!) and try to drink plenty of water. Walking also helps.
    Avoid bananas (yum yum, delicious!).
Lactulose syrup or Movicolon are indeed two things that help if dietary tips aren't enough.

By the way, those two gestational sacs sound super exciting! Keep us posted,

    cheers
