Hi!
Last week I had my IUD removed after 2.5 years because I’d been having light bleeding every two weeks for the last few months, and since getting it placed, I’d still felt very emotional and sensitive. The first few days after removal I bled a bit more but felt much better. Lately though, I’ve been feeling really tired, getting headaches, and feeling nauseous. I’m blaming it on the IUD removal; my body readjusting; but somewhere inside, I’m still worried. -

Hi
It sounds familiar to me too. A week ago I had my Mirena coil removed and replaced with a copper coil, but now I'm experiencing a lot of symptoms: headaches, nausea, slightly high blood pressure, abdominal pain. There hasn't been much bleeding yet. It really resonates with me—after removal, do your symptoms really persist? -

My IUD was removed on January 25th (2nd IUD, had it for 8 years in total).
I feel out of balance, have mood swings and lower back pain. I feel listless and tired. I sleep poorly, dream more and often have heart palpitations in bed. I have extreme hair loss and often feel dizzy and nauseous. It feels like I constantly feel my uterus, with cramps and twinges. I briefly hoped for an immediate pregnancy, but now that I'm reading this forum, I unfortunately recognize too much.
After removal, I bled a little for 2 days (brown blood).
Hopefully, your symptoms and mine will subside and a regular cycle will return. It's nice that I'm not the only one at least ?? -

Hi Stephanie,
I had my IUD removed on 17/02/2021 after 5 years, and I'm really stressing out about it. How are things for you now, please?
I have severe stomach pain and feel dizzy. The bleeding isn't very heavy for me—not super heavy on the day itself, and now almost nothing for the time being, just brownish blood (so blood that's been there for 2 days is now coming out). I also feel like I'm going to faint in my legs, and I'm really scared that, like I'm reading here, it might take a long time before I get pregnant. Because that was my goal, of course... to get pregnant. But reading here, it doesn't seem like it'll happen right away. That's a shame, since my doctor always told me everything would get back on track immediately afterwards. I should have read this topic first before believing the doctor. This is really a mental blow for me right now, which I'll need to process. -

hi everyone,
i had my coil removed on 17/02/2021. with a surgical procedure in the hospital hence why my strings were gone, this was an incredibly tough time. the operating room, all those instruments lying there, the anesthesia not working, the camera where i could follow everything, no, ,, this was really not nice. baaahh.
lost a lot of blood on the same day
on the 2nd day it was better, almost none and no more stomach pain either
now on the 3rd day, lots of stomach pain, shedding a few more tears now just from emotional strain i think then because i'm reading this topic, i really thought, mirena monster out, everything back to normal after 1 month with the cycle and such. but it's not exactly as i had thought. painful thing to read this here because i was looking for answers. i am glad with these stories i've read here though. because i know what to expect now. i'm a bit scared that it will take forever before i get pregnant because that was the plan actually after removing the coil. the gynecologist even gave me folavit 2 weeks ago, , now i understand why, i'm disappointed in myself that i ever had such a tiny monster in my body. i will never do this again in my life. -

I had two irregular cycles of 14 and 39 days, and almost 10 days of bleeding after having the IUD removed. Then it went back to my old 29-day cycle and I got pregnant. So, 2.5 months after removing the IUD, I got a positive test. Don't lose hope. It might not be as bad as you think!

Hi everyone,
I also had my Mirena removed on January 13th. I got my period on January 17th with cramps and 5 days of bleeding. So in my opinion, that was just a regular period. I never got my period again while I had the Mirena in.
But now, up until today, I haven't had my period at all! I often feel nauseous, tired, have lower abdominal cramps, and lower back pain. I really hope I'll get my period soon, because this is quite exhausting. The tests are negative. -

Good evening, it's pretty silly that I'm responding as a man.. but my, now almost ex-wife, also had her IUD removed... Her whole body was off, I didn't recognize her anymore. She was open to new things and unfortunately other people. As a result, we are now in a real divorce. Is there anyone who recognizes this too? Or someone from the immediate environment? I don't want to blame the IUD, but it is quite coincidental. Would love to hear it.... -

Hi Ben, that's a really tough situation you're in, but I don't think it has anything to do with the IUD, so it's just an unpleasant coincidence. I've also become happier and, because of that, I've been more open to new fun things/activities since I've been feeling better in my own skin. I really want to do more fun things with my partner again. Love for your partner won't change by removing the IUD, it seems to me..
For the other (ex) IUD users:
I've now been off the IUD for 6 months, after 5.5 years of use. I had it removed at the hospital because of anxiety. My cycle went back to normal right away. I could clearly tell when it was coming.. stomach pain, headache, bloating. Last month I was suddenly 5 weeks late, with no symptoms. And now, suddenly, there was only a 3.5-week gap. Very tired, sore legs, and feeling sick, nauseous. So tired that I couldn't even stand up until my period finally started. Then I realized where the pain and symptoms were coming from, but I hadn't expected my period yet, so I didn't connect the dots.
I had hoped that after 6 months everything would be completely stable with the hormones again, but apparently it needs more time..? -

Hi R,
I have exactly the same experience here. My first period after having the Mirena removed finally started last week, and it was a 44-day cycle. I'm curious whether it will be regular from now on or if it will take this long again. Of course, I hope not, given our desire for a child. How are things with you now? -

Hi everyone,
I’m just responding to Ben (1-3 years old). First of all, it’s brave and good that you share your concerns on this platform.
What made me decide to have the Mirena coil removed were mainly the migraines and mood swings. I really didn’t feel like myself, and those mood changes definitely affected my relationship with my husband. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
Of course, it could just be a coincidence that you’ve decided to separate. But in my case, the Mirena was the culprit.
Wishing you all the best! And greetings. -

Hi everyone,
I had my Mirena IUD removed at the end of December because we're trying to conceive. My first period came 27 days later, which made me really happy, but it didn't last long. Since then, my cycle has been all over the place...
My second period came on day 34. For the following months, my cycle has varied between 30 and 36 days, and now I'm late again. I always get those pre-period symptoms when I'm about to start, but I still don't have any actual bleeding.
It's so frustrating because you can't really predict when ovulation is happening. I did ovulation tests for a month, but they were always negative, which just made me more stressed and anxious about possibly not ovulating at all. So I stopped testing.
I'm hoping my cycle will regulate soon because this is really not fun. Maybe I'm just being impatient and need to give it time, but my GP said I should come see her if it's still like this after two months. I'm curious to see what she can do for me. -

Hi T89,
I'm curious if you've managed to get pregnant by now?
I've just been experiencing that whole list of symptoms since I first got my Mirena IUD inserted (7 years ago), especially the mood swings and feeling lethargic and just not in the mood for intimacy, pff, luckily I have a very sweet partner who handles it well haha..
My partner and I also want to try for a baby this year, so I'm considering getting my Mirena removed. I was really torn about whether to do it soon or in a few months. I couldn't find much on Google except for a few stories saying you're fertile right after removal and from ladies who got pregnant within a month. Now that I've read the experiences here that it can actually take quite a while for your cycle to get back on track after removal, I've made up my mind and will call my GP soon to get it removed.
Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it helped me enormously to clear up my doubts.
Hopefully I'll read from more responders here that they've now become pregnant.
Greetings. -

I had my Mirena removed on May 4th after 10 years. I haven't had any bleeding yet. But I also never got my period while I had the Mirena in. So up until now, I haven't had a period at all. I do feel nauseous often, very tired, have cramps in my lower abdomen, lower back pain, and am extremely bloated. Normally I exercise for 2 hours every day, but now I have no energy at all. Hopefully, I'll get through this soon. -

Hi everyone, I really relate to the stories. The symptoms like headaches, palpitations, and mood swings after removal. I had the Mirena for about 9 years and had it removed in mid-January 2021. Now I'm talking with my GP about how to proceed and what's best for my body. I'm turning 46 next week and want to stay healthy for a long time.
Just a response to Ben; Ben, it could definitely be a coincidence for me, because I've been happily married for over 24 years and never let anyone else in, but I did often feel like I saw potential in "every man." I shared this properly with my husband and hit the brakes, but it's true that I didn't recognize my own sexual feelings either. I also struggle more with jealousy (which is completely misplaced in my relationship). Ben, I wish you strength and hope your ex can tell you more about it and restore your honor. Best, Mlies -

Hi everyone,
I'll start from the beginning...
In Feb 2019 I gave birth. Unfortunately, my placenta got stuck and I had heavy bleeding (unfortunately didn't get anything given after the birth). In June I had the Mirena coil inserted. Unfortunately, I kept having heavy bleeding, extreme stomach pain, mood swings, menopausal symptoms, and even my PCOS got worse. In July I got a twisted ovary, the cyst was as big as normal and twisted around its axis. After 4 months of nothing but misery, and a body that couldn't function properly anymore, I had the coil removed. The bleeding stopped immediately. But unfortunately, my body (now 2 years later) still shows that there are hormones in my body. My periods don't really come through (1 to 2 days of light bleeding) and then it's over. Before I used to have at least 5 days and it was good, but now it's totally not like that. I finally found a gynecologist who told me that my PCOS got worse because of the Mirena and that I should never have gotten it due to the complications of the birth... Does anyone else relate to this? -

Hi everyone,
I'm now a year further after having my IUD removed. I had one period in between and then never got my period again. Has anyone else experienced this? -

I had my IUD removed in January 2020 after 5 years. I had it removed because we wanted a baby. My period came back regularly right away.
In August this year, I actually had a positive test. Later, my period came anyway.
About 2 weeks ago, I had a gynecological ultrasound. Everything was fine, luckily.
We're tracking my fertile window, ovulation, etc. Still, it's not working out.
I already have two kids, 8 and 9 years old.
Any tips are welcome because I'm at my wit's end. -

Hi Ben, that’s really tough to hear. It seems like women on hormones can react differently to men than women not on hormones, and vice versa. I think there’s been research done on this. But at the same time, that’s obviously no excuse for her to cheat, if I’m understanding you correctly.
I’ve noticed that without the coil, I’m feeling much more sexually attracted to my partner again. That feeling was almost gone when I had my coil in. So it can definitely make a difference.
I hope this helps you a bit. But her inappropriate behavior is still on her, not on the coil.
For the other women, could someone tell me if the emotional mood swings, headaches, and fatigue go away? I’m having a terrible time with these too. I was so happy to get rid of my coil—it was such a nasty thing—but now I’m pretty shocked by this. By the way, I also had bleeding for about a week, but thankfully it’s stopped! Apparently that’s quite normal too, so I hope that’s somewhat reassuring.
