Hormones going wild after removing the IUD / getting pregnant

Hi everyone,

In November I took the big step of having my Mirena IUD removed (after 8 years). Naturally, it wasn't as simple as just going to the GP; I had to go to the hospital twice after my visit because the thread couldn't be found. Anyway, I'm finally rid of the IUD!

However, right after this "delivery," the symptoms started again and are still present regularly, which I never had with the IUD:
- Headaches
- Binge eating urges
- Nausea
- Cramps
- Metallic taste
- Sore breasts/nipples
- Bloating
- Extreme fatigue

In other words, my hormones are going wild!

I thought I might be pregnant right away... Unfortunately, after finally taking a test, it turned out I wasn't...
And my period started a few days later. (By the way, it was about two weeks later than it should have been.)

I assume my cycle and body just need time to get going again after having an IUD for years, so this is probably normal...
But it's certainly not fun!

So my question is: are there other women who have had these experiences after having their IUD removed?
And how long did it take before you got pregnant?

Best regards!!

I had my IUD removed in early November and then bled heavily for 8 days. But last time I only had my period for 5 days and it was fairly normal. My body feels really stable; it's been a long time since I've felt this good. I just need to get used to the natural processes of my body again.

I had my IUD removed in January 2015. I also had a lot of side effects; I thought I was pregnant right away. Nothing could be further from the truth. I didn't get my period for the first time until April, then suddenly I missed it for two months. Then I had it for three weeks. Then I missed it for two months again. The side effects did get less and less. Eventually, everything settled down from August onwards and came regularly. In October, I got my positive test. So it took me 9 months, but I only had 6 cycles. Yeah, it can really take a while, even though they say you can get pregnant right away, and the internet is full of quick pregnancies. But my body really had to unlearn it; every body is different. I hope you get a positive test soon!
    Good luck!
    Love

So relatable! After removing it the first time, my cycle quickly became regular again, and I was pregnant after 4 months. I got an IUD right after giving birth (8 weeks postpartum). This one was removed in September 2014, and this time it took 8 months to get pregnant. I only had my period 4 times during those 8 months. My cycles suddenly became very irregular. Whenever there was a change in my hormone levels, I’d feel nauseous and have various complaints. So even during ovulation and the start of my period.

Wishing you lots of success in getting pregnant!!

Totally relatable! I got a Mirena for the first time after 2 years. I had it removed in April. Unfortunately, no pregnancy yet. I had really messed up hormones... this only started to settle in the last 2 months. Before my previous pregnancies, I was on the pill. My first pregnancy took 2.5 years to happen. The second and third came pretty much naturally... so I think it doesn't really mean anything... But I totally get how frustrating it is! Good luck!

I have this too! I had my IUD removed 5 weeks ago. This is also the reason I ended up here, because unfortunately I came to ask if this is normal. Food cravings, super emotional, and I just don't feel good in my own skin!
I'm just wondering if this will balance out again, because if I keep feeling this way, I'll probably have the IUD put back in!

    Hi,
I had my IUD removed in early June 2019 because we wanted to have a baby. However, it still hasn't happened for us, despite paying extra attention to ovulation tests.
Since the IUD was removed, I've been very emotional and can start crying over the smallest and silliest things. It's gotten so bad that I often don't even recognize myself and think Act normally!!
I really thought we'd be pregnant by now...

Hi hi! Did this come through okay? How long did this take?

Hi everyone! These symptoms are so relatable. I had my Mirena coil removed 4 weeks ago; there was some spotting the first week, but otherwise no issues. Then it hit suddenly: dizziness, extreme fatigue, emotional ups and downs, occasional palpitations, and feeling restless/panicky. I can't even manage a full day of work anymore. I had a Mirena before and didn't react that strongly when it was removed then. But I do recognize these symptoms from after my previous birth. I've read online about the 'Mirena crash', but most info is only available in English. I really hope it gets better soon because I'm going crazy!

    Hi everyone.
So relatable. I had my IUD removed in early Feb. After two days of removal, I got a lot of headaches, stomach pain, yeah, 1.5 days of bleeding. And then I was gone.
A week later, the symptoms came:
    Nausea
    Headaches
    Stomach pain
    Sensitive breasts
    Crying spells
I thought, yes, pregnant, but no, my test was negative.

Hi everyone, my IUD was removed last Tuesday. Two days later, I got my period, which lasted three days. Since the moment it came out, I've had bloody discharge every time. Does anyone know if this is normal?

    Hi everyone,
I had my Mirena removed in early February (after about 9 years) and experienced dizziness and nausea for the first two weeks. Fortunately, I feel fine otherwise!
It's been almost 3 months now and I still haven't gotten my period (and I'm not pregnant either). I hope it happens soon because I'm starting to get a little worried.

Had my IUD removed in late August due to wanting kids, but haven't gotten pregnant yet.
My period is also much lighter (just brown smears when going to the toilet), before the IUD it used to fill a pad every time and now it only lasts 2.5 days, whereas it used to be 4-5 days. It's nice and regular though, but could there not be enough endometrium present yet and should my cycle need to get more in order first?

T89, it feels like I'm reading my own story. I also had my IUD removed at the hospital because my GP couldn't find it. I had an IUD for 6 years. My periods weren't that long, and they came quickly before the IUD removal, but the symptoms I had were not normal (they mainly appeared around my ovulation and lasted until after my period. I thought every time that I was pregnant, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case!). I'm now 13 months further and still not pregnant. Before, I got pregnant quite quickly.

    My symptoms:
Nausea, sensitive breasts, emotional swings, binge eating, bloated stomach, lower back pain, stomach cramps, metallic taste, headaches, etc.

    No IUD for me!!

    Jolanda; condoms aren't everything either!

    Hi!
I've been off the birth control pill for almost a year and a half now because I wanted kids. Unfortunately, after a year and a half, I'm still not pregnant, but my periods are irregular.
So the birth control pill is definitely not good for people who want babies in the short term.

    Hi!
I had my IUD removed on 01/18/2021 (after 3 years) (because we want another child) and a day later I got really heavy bleeding with clots.
Today, 01/27/2021, I still have those very heavy bleeds with severe cramps, and uh.. serious mood swings and I'm really tired.
I realize this is probably a kind of big purge after all the hormones in my body.
I first thought it was my period already, but no..
I looked up and read about withdrawal bleeding, but nowhere do they say it lasts this long, they talk about 5 days max, I've had this for 9 days now
As long as I have these bleeds, we obviously can't have sex..
Are there any other women who had this problem?
  17. Konijntje #18

    Hi Stefanie,

That's really annoying, but luckily not too weird. I had the same thing. It took 14 days for me, and the two cycles after that were different too—one was 14 days and the other 39 days. I'm hoping to have a normal cycle again now. Hopefully, it'll settle down for you soon too!

So I'm not the only one, I read. There's so little to find online.
My IUD came out 6-1 weeks ago. I had immediate bleeding and cramps for 1 week. But late last week it seemed like the first real period had been.
I notice that I have to get used to how I feel a lot. Uncertain about the ailments and hormones. Out of balance, sometimes like I'm going to get sick. (tested for Corona a few times but all negative) muscle pain and back pain. Then again nauseous and headache. Kind of hot flashes in between. Night sweats. I almost think I'm in menopause, but that's quite early (32). I didn't think that all this could come from removing the IUD.
Do others also have hot flashes?

Are those bleeds so intense that you can't have sex? Maybe that would actually help because it triggers other reactions!
