Fear

Hi hi,

After trying everything for exactly 3 years and both deciding last month to stop trying, I found out I was pregnant last Saturday (Oct 24).
We both couldn't believe it, so we did 2 more tests (Oct 25 and Oct 29), both immediately positive.
Counting from my first period, I should be 7 weeks and 2 days today, but since last Saturday the fear has set in.
In 2009 (my last pregnancy) I had an empty gestational sac after 10 weeks, and now I'm terrified this will happen again.
Last Tuesday (5 weeks and 6 days pregnant) I lost a small blood clot; I didn't know I was pregnant yet and thought my period was coming.
Yesterday, wiping off mucus with light pink spotting.
All this, of course, doesn't help me feel reassured. I don't feel pregnant (though I do have the typical pregnancy symptoms, quite a few actually), but I just don't feel it, and I'm not ready to get emotionally involved yet.
Can you guys reassure me?

Well, everyone can tell you all sorts of things to put your mind at ease, but honestly, it doesn't help at all. All those stories just make you doubt more. You won't find your answer there. Because every body and every pregnancy is different. And I assume you don't want false hope. The only one who can give you an answer is the midwife, who can do an ultrasound, so at least you'll know where you stand! Good luck!

I had so much anxiety in the first few weeks too, especially from reading all sorts of negative stuff everywhere. I had a fantastic pregnancy and gave birth to a healthy baby boy after 39 weeks. Try not to worry too much and especially don't look up or read too much (I know it's very tempting)!

    Lots of success!

Congratulations. I’d just ask for an ultrasound as reassurance... around this time you should be able to see a little heart.

    Dear Beestenboel,

We can't really put your mind at ease because we don't have a crystal ball (if only we did!). The thing is, sometimes things go wrong. Unfortunately, unfortunately, new life is very fragile. BUT: every day, tons of babies are also born. Every day, things go really well for many people too. We live in the best countries in the world for healthcare, follow-up, and aftercare... so it seems like luck is on our side. 'Fingers crossed', cautious joy, healthy living, and waiting (and praying if you were to do this). That's all we can do. Try to let go a bit: you have no control over this, but somewhere, that can also be reassuring. That's how it is for me. I worry a lot too. I just posted about it before I saw your post. We might feel a bit more at ease when they eventually leave the house (and even then...) :-)

Thank you so much for your replies
Strangely enough, my anxiety has disappeared like snow in the sun since yesterday, and now I’m more like, it goes well so often, why wouldn’t it go well now?
I have an ultrasound on Monday, I’ll be almost 8 weeks then, hopefully the baby will be visible too!

    I'm cheering for you guys!

The finger counting worked! The ultrasound was good—saw one baby with the external scan, and there was a good heartbeat right away. I was told I’m one week behind according to the midwife, so I’m now 6 weeks and 5 days (by my last period, it would be 7 weeks and 5 days). I’ve been referred to the gynecologist, and we can already go there next Monday.
