Hi, I'm Anja and I'm 39 weeks pregnant. I work in healthcare as a nurse and I'm still doing that.
Do you think I should stop or should I just keep going?

Best,
Anja

Kind of a weird question, I think. Well, since you could give birth at any moment, I think it's better to take a break for now. But you probably wouldn't keep working if you couldn't handle it, so yeah. After the birth, you'll definitely need a few weeks for yourself. Don't you have maternity leave or something?

No, I don't have maternity leave.

    Everyone is entitled to leave!

Didn't mean to say this is the Netherlands, you're entitled to maternity leave anyway. It's not normal, you can give birth anytime, girl! That's not right.

If you live in the Netherlands, you're legally entitled to leave. No employer can deny you that, and honestly, I don't believe there's only 1 employer in the Netherlands who would let you keep working.

I also believe that in Belgium there's leave before and after giving birth.

If you live somewhere else, it's up to you to take good care of yourself and your baby.

    Good luck with it!

Sounds like a strong story. Companies get fined for that. When I was pregnant, I wanted a week less leave, so a week more work, but that wasn't allowed!

If you're self-employed, the rules are different and your leave is very short. Because, well, it's your income, but you get compensation for a certain period if you're self-employed. So go get some rest and contact various agencies that can inform you about this.

It seems to me that maternity leave isn't there for nothing. From what I hear around me, you really do need those six weeks. I don't know what kind of setting you work in as a nurse, but I work as a caregiver in home care, I'm 25 weeks pregnant now, and it's already getting hard to bend over to put on the (support) stockings of my clients. I'm already on sick leave at 50% due to pelvic instability, but it seems really tough to me to keep working until 39 weeks without that.
