cosmetics and skincare products during pregnancy, what to do?

Hi everyone,

Lately you hear and read more and more about it: deodorant, perfume, shower gel, shampoo and makeup can contain various substances that might have harmful effects on your health and your baby's. Yet I haven't heard my midwife talk about this yet. When I asked if I could dye my hair, she calmly said "sure". Shouldn't she inform me about this? Or should I just look up information myself?

Greetings!

On its own, it would be quite handy if she gave you advice about that. But I think I'm a stubborn type who wants to do my own research to see what's good and not so good in my pregnancy. I prefer to look into things myself. I often get irritated by unsolicited advice; I'd rather figure those things out on my own. But the idea in general wouldn't be so bad at all. Maybe there are women who feel the need for that.

    Thanks for your reply, Madelene!

I’d also always do my own research, hehe. But I find it weird that I have to look up this information myself, when it’s actually the midwife’s job to inform us about these kinds of things. We do get informed about drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes, so we can decide for ourselves what to do with that info. Blood tests and urine tests for diseases etc., so why not this?

because it's not proven that dyeing your hair is harmful. I assume that if a midwife says it doesn't cause harm, then it's probably not harmful. They actually advise against searching the internet because the information isn't always accurate. If you're unsure, the midwife is the expert here.

Why make such a big deal out of it? The annoying thing about the internet and people posting all sorts of articles there is that it often causes unnecessary worry.

I'm now 29 weeks, almost 30 weeks pregnant, I've dyed my hair, I just use the same cosmetic products I've always used, and my baby is more than healthy.

I trust that the midwives are the experts and that they can give sound, good advice. They are required to stay up to date with all kinds of scientific research. The pharmacist who advised me about a remedy for persistent cough told me that many companies (like cosmetic companies) often state beforehand that there MIGHT be an effect on the baby's growth to cover themselves legally. No company wants a liability claim.

The pharmacist showed me a booklet with all kinds of studies and meta-analyses of various products, and it turned out that everyday use of products has little to no harmful effect on the baby's growth or development.

However, I still believe that every expectant mom should do what makes her feel comfortable. Happy mommy, happy baby! I trust my gut instinct and do what feels right for me, and I hope you do the same, despite everyone else's advice!!
