Pregnant and overweight.

Hi,

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for about a year and a half. I have excess weight, so I wanted to get pregnant healthily, which is why I started dieting. I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and we took a break from trying for a while. Mostly because we just weren’t focusing on it at the time, wanted to hit pause, and I planned to lose even more weight in the coming weeks. In other words, no birth control pills, because my GP said I’d have to get used to them again if I started, so we used condoms. But apparently, a “little accident” happened…

Oh yes, I’m pregnant!!! And it’s more than welcome!! I’m so incredibly happy!!!

According to my calculations and the pregnancy test, I’m six weeks pregnant with my first baby today. I’m really excited, especially since I have excess weight. Is there anyone reading this who has experience with being pregnant and having excess weight? I live very healthily and do my best, because I want the very best for our baby.

Best wishes, A

    hey,

    congratulations on your pregnancy!
it's often the case that you get pregnant at the moment you least expect it, because you're not thinking about it at all and aren't fixated on getting pregnant.

regarding your weight, i also have excess weight and i lost 20 kg before getting pregnant and i'm currently pregnant with our first child at 23 weeks. i still have excess weight now because my bmi is 29.
i lost weight by living healthier and i notice that if you keep doing that, you're less likely to gain it back even when you're pregnant. currently i've gained 5 kg due to my pregnancy. at first i found it really hard to gain weight because i still had to shift my mindset. i paid extremely close attention to my eating to stay under 90kg and now i'm going back over that and i find it psychologically very difficult. i just hope i'll be able to lose it again easily after giving birth, but i'm already afraid of that.

    best wishes, Ukje

    Hi Ukje,

Thanks for your message, and congratulations to you too on your pregnancy!
My BMI is currently 40 So way too heavy!! I'm really upset about it, but all I hope is that my baby won't get into trouble because of it! But when I read things online, some women are even heavier than me and have healthy babies without any problems.
I'm really watching my diet, especially now. I'm already growing a bit, can barely fit into my pants anymore, they say it could be due to bloated intestines. It's hard because I was so healthy before, and now I can't even wear my pants anymore. It's for a good cause, but the thought of not having to hide my belly later on is just so weird..

    Greetings A

Hi A. I was also pregnant with a higher weight. Well, with a slightly lower BMI. I made an agreement with my GP and midwife to think well about my eating and not to gain too much. We had calculated that 6 kilos would be a nice weight for me at 40 weeks. In the end, it was 5 kilos and my son alone weighed 4330 grams.
T also helped that my pregnancy cravings consisted of cherry tomatoes and ice cubes!
Keep in mind that you have to do a sugar test to see if you might develop gestational diabetes. Eat healthy, move nicely, and enjoy. Don't consciously try to lose weight because that's not good for the baby either.

    Hi Amy,

Thanks for your message. I do pay very close attention to my diet. I drink lots of water and only eat healthy stuff. I'm not gaining any weight and I'm not losing much either. I went to the GP yesterday morning because of severe pain in the lower right side of my belly. I was worried about an ectopic pregnancy.. But luckily, the first ultrasound showed a nice little blob with a heartbeat, so everything is fine!!! I told the GP right away that I could barely eat anything yesterday morning; this is probably due to bloated intestines. I also mentioned that I was worried things might go wrong because of my overweight. He said I shouldn't worry too much about it, since I do have some extra weight (but I don't look like it at all hehe, I have a heavy bone structure too). But I'm still worried.. My first appointment with the midwife is on January 28th; we'll definitely talk more about it there..

    Best, A
