After 7 months postpartum, very heavy period

I’ve been breastfeeding for 7 months now, and yesterday I got my period for the first time. Normally no problem, but last night it was really heavy! I had to run to the toilet this morning, and I was already completely covered in blood. I’ve had to change a super tampon every hour (normally I can leave mine in for about 3 hours).

I’ve never had such a heavy period before (I’ve always had a normal period and cycle), so I’m wondering if this is normal and if others here have experienced this too?

Should I call my gynecologist, or is my body just “cleaning itself out”?

Thanks in advance!

    @Marieke,

    Heyhey, long time no hear! Is everything okay with the little girl...

    I think your body might be cleaning itself out now after not having had a period for 7 months. I'd recommend checking with a doctor or gynecologist just to be sure.
    It seems like a bit too much blood loss to me... Maybe some iron tablets...
    By the way, I'm not sure if that's allowed with breastfeeding, for example.

    Love and hugs

    Hi Marieke,
    I'm still breastfeeding now, and my daughter is 7.5 months old. I got my period a week ago, and it wasn't just a little bit It felt like I was losing liters of blood. I also had more pain than usual. But apparently, this is normal. After not having a period for 16 months, your body needs to get back into the rhythm. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Only if it stays this heavy in the next few cycles should you ask your doctor what you can do about it. And getting your period is a good sign that everything is working normally again.
    We should be glad that we're only getting our periods now. Some of my friends were back on their cycles just two months after giving birth.
    Love!

    @Ju,

    Everything's running smoothly here, with three girls there's always something going on! Emma is doing well, she's happily chatting away and turning into a lovely little lady! But time flies so fast!!!!
    One more morning of school here and then we're off to enjoy the holidays! Don't feel you always have to reply, but do check in here regularly to see how everyone's doing!

    @ anonymous

    I've also done a bit of snooping around online and it does seem to be more common than I thought. It's a bit less intense during the day now, so I think it's just coming back in waves, but I hope it won't be this severe every month, otherwise I might consider using something!
    It's already nice to know I'm not the only one!
    And yes, I'm glad it's been 7 months since it went away! (with my other two daughters, it only came back after a year after I had completely stopped breastfeeding, so this time it's a bit earlier)

    cheers, Marieke

    @Marieke,

    It's nice to read that Emma is doing well..
    Yes, already 7 months old our little sprouts...
    Everyone comfortably settled with you..
    With the little boy it's going super duper..
    He's making all kinds of cute sounds and it seems like he's saying papa or mama from time to time but it's not quite clear yet..
    Has Emma's first tooth come through yet? Nothing here yet..

    Love and greetings from me

    @Marieke,

    It's not hard at all with 3 kids, they all need something completely different.. Yeah, managing the time can be tough sometimes but during the day it's an oasis of peace.. WONDERFUL...

    Talk soon, take a look at my topic too..

    Love from me

    Good to read what might be waiting for me soon! I'm currently 5 months pregnant, but I'd definitely be scared if there was a sudden heavy bleeding

    Greetings

    @Patricia,

    Nice to read that.
    That way we can all learn from each other.

    I got my period for the first time last month (3 months after my C-section), and it was really, really bad. I lost a ton of blood that week. I also had a lot of stomach pain. Now I'm on my second period, and it's just like before. I think it's indeed because your body is still getting back into rhythm... but I don't remember having it this bad after my first C-section either.
