Who else has an irregular cycle and is trying to get pregnant or has already become pregnant?

Mommy
I'm 25 and stopped taking the pill back in February 2012. My menstrual cycle is still irregular.
I'm curious to hear stories from women who are in the same situation, and from those who got pregnant despite the irregularity! Would love to chat if you'd like!
Best, Joy

Hi! I also have an irregular cycle, so annoying, right?
  2. kruimel #3

    Hi Jopie.
Do you have ovulation every month?
I've also been very irregular with my period for half a year now, and so far I've never felt or seen ovulation by tracking my temperature.
I'd also like to start using ovulation test strips, but I wouldn't know when to start. One cycle is 69 days and the other is 88, and so on...
How do you do it, if I may ask? Greetings

    Hi ladies,

I'm dealing with the same issue. I stopped the pill in December 2012 and have had very regular periods since then. My cycles are quite short, and I do ovulate, but they vary quite a bit.
My first cycle was 30 days, and after that, I've been between 22 and 26 days. I've tested with ovulation predictor kits the last two times, and I think the difference lies in when I ovulate. This time, my ovulation was around day 11, and in my previous cycle, it was around day 16, while my cycle was 26 days. So I feel like the irregularity affects my luteal phase, which in turn could affect implantation.
I brought this up with my doctor, and he said that irregular cycles don't necessarily have to affect getting pregnant, but I still find it annoying that they aren't regular. You start to think something is wrong with your body.....

Because my cycles are quite short, it's manageable for me with ovulation tests; I rarely need more than 4. With longer cycles, it's indeed a bit trickier because the period is longer. The ovulation tests usually come with good instructions on when to start testing, depending on your average cycle length. I think it's really just a matter of trying out what works best for everyone.

Thanks for your reply, @babbel. You're right, it does make you wonder if something's wrong.
Once this round is over, I'll try using ovulation tests in the next one. Who knows, maybe I'll get more clarity then.

    Hi Ladies,

    Nice that you're responding!
I didn't have an egg with my first two cycles, there was very light bleeding and it lasted 6 days. No temp difference or complaints.
Then I had 2 ovulations and now I'm waiting for my third. Both times I had an elevated temp and all kinds of complaints afterwards. Sore nipples, stabbing pains, sensitive uterus, emotional and water retention. After the 2nd time I naturally recognized the symptoms. Now I'm looking out for possible symptoms for my ovulation, I notice that my discharge changes. (sorry!) I also bought ovulation tests but that remains difficult if you're irregular, I started this week testing every 2 days, still not positive. Now they say you should test every day but then I can keep busy and I'm too involved with it again. I try to avoid that a bit. So I don't know yet how it will turn out. Otherwise, cuddling with hubby, every 2 days...

I also find it very annoying that it's so irregular! I also started doubting myself and sometimes it makes me insecure. But I should indeed trust that it's possible to get pregnant. And that it will come naturally, that your body is doing its best to restore the balance.

Did you have a lot of trouble with ovulation?

    Greetings Joy

    Hey.
I think I haven't had an egg yet either.. Just like you don't have any temp differences or any complaints at all.
But my periods are also very light and last between 5 and 10 days, and I don't even need sanitary pads or anything for that.
Besides, I also lose small amounts of (old) blood / brown discharge in between.. Sorry hihi
So annoying, then you think for sure yes there it finally is but no way...
I haven't had any issues with stopping the pill, or could my cycle still be so weird because of stopping the pill? I have no idea. I've been off the pill for 6 months now.
I'm going to ask my GP about it next week.
I'm 20 years old and thought I'd be more regular again sooner, but unfortunately not.
    Greetings Kruimel

    Hi Crumb,

It looks like your body is still shedding the lining from the pill. It can take a long time for your body to build up a rhythm again. I didn't start losing any red blood until after 9 months! Now I've had 2 proper periods, and I'm waiting for ovulation again. It's good that you're having brown discharge in between, I never really had that.
I'm now 14 months off the pill and still irregular. Don't let me put you off thinking you can't get pregnant then, but I do get impatient now and then.
I'm very curious what your GP says, keep us posted?

I really wouldn't know what the issue is, most likely still related to coming off the pill, although after that weird (and in my opinion egg-free) cycle & getting a bit heavier afterwards, I haven't had any further complaints after stopping the pill.
I'm going to the GP tomorrow morning. I'm a bit nervous, but excited to see what she'll say!
But she's a really nice doctor, and last year when I was still on the pill, she already referred me to a gynecologist because I stopped menstruating... I think I can follow up on that and maybe they can help me I'll let you know! X
  9. kruimel #10

@jopie I see you've already been at it for over a year! Have you made any plans to go to the GP? Or have you already been once?
  10. Mommy started this #11

    Hi Kruimel,

Yes, that's right! No, I haven't been to the GP yet. When my period started again, I wanted to wait and see how my body would settle back into its cycles. Now I'm having longer cycles, so I'm waiting for ovulation again. After that, I want to see how long the next one lasts. If it's just as long, I'll make an appointment with the GP.

I'm trying to give my body some time; I'd rather not rely on all those artificial medications, but sometimes that's not easy—I really want a little one!

I had the same symptoms as you, and they were even heavier, so no egg/surge for a long time. I also had emotional periods and sometimes felt really unwell. Luckily, you didn't have that! Good luck with the doctor, I'm curious what advice you get.

That’s so impressive of you that you didn’t rush to the GP right away. It’s naturally much better for you too, to give your body some time first, but it’s so hard, you want to get pregnant so badly.. I just don’t have the patience for it..!
I’ve had those emotional periods too, always have, I’m quite a crybaby hihi but lately it’s been more frequent.
I can only see the GP in 2 weeks unfortunately, so I’ll just have to wait and see.. It doesn’t really have much urgency anyway. I’ve already been pregnant for 7 months so 2 more weeks can’t hurt.
After how many months did you get a 'normal' period / finally ovulate?
    X

Oh wow, that’s a long wait!
I didn’t even ovulate for the first time until about 10 months in, so it can definitely take a while.
This time I was waiting for an egg again, but yesterday (day 36) I got my period. Didn’t expect that, but it’s good too. I think this cycle didn’t have an egg—no temp change and a much lighter period than before.
Any changes for you yet? And don’t forget to let yourself cry a little now and then—it really helps! I always do too!

  13. kruimel #14

Yeah, I've gotten used to waiting for it, hehe. But you know all about that, of course!
For me, it's completely weird right now. I've had brown discharge for over 2 weeks, and sometimes pink/red (ugh, sorry!). It's really strange. And then you start googling, and of course, every site says you're pregnant... So I'll take a test tomorrow, you never know.

It's weird that you ovulate one month and then not the next. How long is your cycle on average now?

    Hi,

That is definitely weird! I've never had that, such a long-lasting pink/brown discharge. But I do know that my real period is heavy with clots and lasts 3 days, whereas this one is light and has lasted 5 days.
What I know is that your uterus then expels its mucus plug, even if there's no ovulation. Maybe that's what's happening with you too. Maybe it's a good question to ask when you go to the GP?
    Have you taken another test?
I'm done with my period now, going for it again. I'm now doing cycle tracking, I'm going to try with her to see when my fertile days are coming and how my body responds. Exciting!

  15. kruimel #16

    I do think that's true..
Anyway, I've stopped counting my cycles, I just don't know when a new one starts and when the other one ends.. I'm done stressing about it so much.
I'm tracking my temp and that's it..
I did a test on Tuesday anyway, obviously negative..
Is that what cycle guidance is? I looked at a site recently but maybe it's still too early for me to start there..
Maybe if the GP doesn't find anything weird, I'll look into something like that.
    Hope it works for you!

I went to the GP this morning.. Got a referral for the gynecologist. The GP thought my cycle and temp chart were quite strange, especially for my age, and didn't think it was necessary to keep me going for another half year. I'm not overweight so that can't be it either.
Can call on Friday for an appointment. I'm quite nervous, no idea what to expect..

How are you doing, jopie? Any better insight into your cycle with the cycle guidance?

    Hi Crumb,

That's so nice that your GP is so understanding! I can totally see why you're anxious, I would be too! Wishing you lots of luck, hope you'll be able to go soon.

I definitely have a better insight now! After my last cycle, my body is doing really well, I'm very happy about that!
I'm in my fertile days, been trying for 3 days now. Unfortunately, last night was absolutely awful, vomiting and stomach pain.
Today I'm relaxing on the couch and taking it easy, but I'd actually like to try again tonight.
How do I know this? My cycle tracking predicted that I'd ovulate tomorrow or Saturday. I took my last ovulation test today (it's in my photos) and it's strongly positive!

I'm curious and will let you know!

Hi. I have the problem of irregular cycles, and it's really annoying. I've never used the pill, but I'm trying to get pregnant and it's not working!! And what does "cycle" mean if I'm allowed to know that?
  19. Nicole Guest #20

    Hi Crumb,

A cycle of 69 or 88 days doesn't seem quite right to me. You can usually take ovulation tests at any time; ovulation typically happens on day 14 after your first day of menstruation. You can always do an ovulation test, and if you start around that time and do a few in a row over a couple of days, you'll likely find your ovulation. And it's totally normal not to feel your ovulation—I believe only 1 in 20 women can feel it.

    Cheers
