Ketones in urine

Anne
I'm 37w2d pregnant today and had to go to the monitor again today because of my gestational diabetes. Now they also test my urine every time and I had ketones again, also at the last monitor (Tuesday). They always ask me if I haven't eaten for a long time, while I eat at regular times for the diabetes and had eaten an hour before the monitor this morning. They act very casually about it, but I'm starting to worry!
Does anyone have experience with this?

Yeah, I had that with my previous pregnancies too. The best thing is to eat a little something before you go to bed at night. It's best to eat something where the carbs are absorbed slowly. They told me back then that it's best to eat a piece of chocolate. Because of the fats in chocolate, the carbs are absorbed more slowly. Why do you need to eat something before going to sleep, because apparently your body needs carbs at night, doesn't get them, and starts using your fat reserves, burning them, which then shows up in your urine as ketones in the morning. On its own, I don't think it can do much harm, but in the long run, I think it wouldn't be good. Think of it as if you're dieting at night.
Hope you can use this info.

Thanks mama3, I can definitely use that! And I'll follow your tip about the chocolate, yum. I've only gained about 3 to 4 kg so far, and I've been stuck at that weight for sure 12 weeks now, even though my belly is getting noticeably bigger, so it's basically a diet and it's not surprising you're tapping into your fat reserves.
Just 4 more nights to sleep (well, lie in bed) and then it's all over!
    Greetings x

Hi Anne, in the early stages of my pregnancy, I also had ketones in my urine. I was so nauseous that I just couldn't eat anymore, which led to an 8-kilo weight loss. When they tested my urine for ketones and it came back positive, I was admitted to the hospital immediately and spent a week on an IV drip. They explained to me that ketones are a sign that your body is starting to break down your muscles and organs because it doesn't have enough glucose to rely on...
