Hard stool, oh no!

Hi,

My daughter is just 5 months old and has had hard stools for a few weeks. At first, this came with cramps, but thankfully she doesn't have those anymore.

Until about 3 months, she had 3.5g of Johannes bread pit flour in her bottle to help with spitting up. We stopped because we hoped her stools would improve... No luck! Luckily, she doesn't spit up anymore, which is nice.

At 4 months, I started giving her complementary foods, fruit (no bananas) and later also veggie pouches. No difference in her stools. For the past couple of weeks, we've also been giving her Roosvicee Laxo, which she loves and drinks happily, but it hasn't made any difference either! Grrr.....

Now I was thinking of trying fresh fruit (kiwi), which is supposed to have a laxative effect, but she really won't eat it! At the CB clinic, they suggested rooibos tea might help, or otherwise Lactulose. Any other tips? I'd rather not use Lactulose if possible....

My daughter had trouble with that too, and indeed also with laxatives, fruit, etc. etc.
When that didn't help: just add a spoonful of olive oil to the fruit and food, that helped a lot!

Now and then she still has some trouble with it, she's 2 now, oh yes, and ripe pears help too, and dried plums or fresh plums when they're in season!

Good luck, I know how annoying it is!

    Greetings, Margreet

It's also important that your daughter gets plenty to drink. That keeps her stool soft too. Feel free to give her some extra fluids—that's my tip!

What also seems to work really well is flaxseed tea (so let broken flaxseeds steep in boiling water). You could make it a bit more palatable for her with a little bit of apple juice. The flaxseed helps draw more moisture into her intestines, which softens the stool. Good luck!

Adding extra water to the bottle! Both of our kids had this too...this helped a lot and we switched to special formula for colic etc after a few weeks that helped super! Then we gradually went back to normal formula...

For me it's been like this after 2 months too!!
So hard as plasticine, but the nurse didn't look at it strangely.

I pump and add a few drops of olive oil.
And when I really see that she's in pain because she can't poop, we push a tiny wet piece of soap (Yes, sounds crazy I know!!)
into her bottom and after 5 minutes it's out!!!

Hi my little man (now exactly 6 months) also sometimes has trouble. I give him a few sips of lukewarm water from a glass/cup or bottle. If you yourself also have trouble with constipation, that helps too. And Roosvicee isn't so healthy, and if you think about it, there's a ton of sugar in it, and sugar is really bad for your gut!

You have a Rosevicee lax, I think that’s what it’s called; babies can have that too. And orange juice also has a laxative effect. If it takes too long, I’d go to your GP because it’s so sad for those little ones.
