When to start with childcare?

Hi! When did you guys first start having someone else look after your baby? My son is 2 months old and I’d really like to do something nice just with my husband again... My mom lives in the Netherlands and we’re in Belgium, so she can’t just pop over for an evening. My mother-in-law is a nightmare, so I don’t want to leave him with her, plus she lives in Paris... So it would have to be someone I don’t really know... And my little boy cries non-stop from 7 to 11 (trying to shake off some stress from the day). I’m worried that whoever’s babysitting won’t be able to handle it, or that my son will cry even more because it’s not papa or mama comforting him... What do you think I should do? Love, Manon

At 5 weeks, my parents watched him for an evening, and so far we haven’t had a ‘stranger’ babysit, but that’s mostly because our parents live nearby.
Personally, I’d only leave him with a ‘stranger’ when your little one has a consistent bedtime and the worst evening crying is over. For the babysitter, it’s stressful, and for your little one, it’s also unsettling. But... I understand you want to do something nice with your husband! Don’t you have a good friend or family member you trust, who stays calm and can handle it when your little one cries for a few hours?

I’d also rather not have a stranger babysit when they’re still so young. I just don’t have friends who are really keen to babysit for an evening (I’m 20 myself, so my friends are still out partying every weekend). But then I thought about it, and my husband is much older than me (29), and he has a friend who also has a kid, aged 1.5. So I hope they won’t mind babysitting for two kids for an evening. I just don’t know if 2 months might be a bit early – did it work out well for you with 5 weeks? Otherwise, I’ll start worrying excessively again. Thanks for your reply, I’ll go and check if there are more people who might want to babysit! Greetings!

Hi! I'm 20 myself and 20 weeks pregnant. I also babysit a 10-month-old baby. When I first started babysitting, she was 5 months old. She's now completely used to me. I'd love to have a regular babysitter!

    xx
