How was your maternity care nurse?

We had the same maternity nurse for 8 days and were really happy with her. I also felt really sad that she had to leave and found it quite scary to have to do everything on my own. How did your maternity nurse(s) work out for you?

Ours was truly an angel; I don’t know how I could’ve managed without her!

We're pregnant for the second time now and asked for someone with experience. Last time we had someone who really knew a lot about it, and that was super nice!

We had a different maternity nurse almost every day. They were all nice and kind, but I still didn't really like having a different stranger around every day.

We had a great postpartum care nurse for both the first and second baby. The first was really the motherly type who taught us everything, and the second took good care of me and played with the oldest. Both times we had a really nice postpartum week.

Here (Spain) that doesn't exist, a maternity nurse!! But honestly?
I don't think I'd like it that much either.
Then I'd rather seek out our privacy.
Cozy and intimate with partner and baby...

We had an amazing maternity nurse, she was truly a sweetheart.
She respected my young age and taught me everything I needed to know to care for a baby.

    We do miss her, though.

    Hi ladies,

I've thought a lot about whether or not to hire a maternity nurse. You're entitled to one after all, and the health insurance reimburses up to 60 hours here. But the more I think about it, the less appealing the idea becomes. Just like Olivia Anna, I'd rather keep that privacy. It's a stranger you're letting into your home. I don't think I could handle it, but that's personal for everyone, of course. On the other hand, it would be nice to get reassurance that you're doing things right.

I think I'll skip the maternity nurse, but I'll regularly ask my sister, who already has 2 kids, and my mom, who has 5 children, for help. They'll probably be around or call regularly in those first few months to help us with our little bub.

Maybe it's just the language difference here and there, but what is a kraamverzorgster? I didn't have that with my first...

That’s someone who helps you during and after childbirth and teaches you how to breastfeed, bathe your baby, and keep your little one warm. I even hear they cook and clean up after visitors and stuff like that.

They’re usually those real-life moms, very caring.

It only exists in the Netherlands.

It’s just that we had a daycare at our home and were so familiar with kids that on Monday, two of those kids (now 13 and 21!) are coming here in Spain on vacation :-) Waaaaaa!!! I’ve missed them so much, I’m so happy!! (just wanted to share)
So luckily, I already have a lot of experience beforehand.

Otherwise, I can totally imagine how happy you’d be with that!!
Especially if everything is still new to you, or if you had a tough delivery!

I have to say! I value my privacy a lot, but oh, how nice it is to have someone who does your laundry, makes your bed, and makes you a nice fruit shake.

She takes care of the guests, then tidies everything up nicely afterwards. So besides taking care of yourself and your baby (and any older children), she really spoils mom and dad so you can enjoy your maternity week and your baby(ies).

I've decided to really enjoy it this time. With my first, I just showered the first morning and then sat on the couch waiting for coffee, as she told me she'd do that... Nice breakfast in bed. She helped me with my daughter, and I didn't have to worry about my laundry or anything!

Wonderful! I hope I get the same maternity care nurse again; she was really great!!

Oh yeah, she's often present at home births too!

I’m now 34 weeks pregnant with our first baby.
Only.. The longer I think about it, the less happy I am about having a maternity nurse come by.

This person takes up space in my house. Gets involved in things
that are private to me.. I can’t really get used to that idea, and it
also doesn’t sound very nice to have her going through my stuff.

Maybe I’m worrying over nothing, but I really value my privacy..

It also exists in Belgium now and is reimbursed by the health insurance.

I don't know what you're worried about, but a postpartum care nurse really isn't going to go through your private belongings.
I think you're really worrying about nothing. They'll be in your kitchen cupboards, the changing table, and things like that.

And for the ladies who are hesitating..you basically don't have a choice if you want to take at least minimal postpartum care.

A midwife will almost always require that. She handles the postpartum care, and experience shows that if there's no postpartum care, the midwife gets very busy. Now you can ask most of your questions to the postpartum care nurse, and otherwise the midwife will be called in each time.

Actually, postpartum care is a luxury that basically only exists in the Netherlands.

I don't really get why so many of you don't want a maternity nurse? I don't like strangers in my house either, but I got over it. Do you think you're going to vacuum, do the laundry, and take care of the baby yourself after giving birth? That's really the last thing you think about right after you've just given birth. I didn't even remember what I had in the fridge by the end, because you're just not thinking about that at all. And they're not even allowed to touch your personal stuff; our maternity nurse didn't tidy up things she had no business touching, just the clothes, dishes, and vacuuming.
I'm super glad she was there afterward; she was really great.

We really had a treasure! I didn't know how I'd manage without her, and she's going to help me out again with my friend, so she's truly amazing.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about it too. On one hand, I'm a bit apprehensive, and on the other, it seems pretty convenient. It probably also depends a bit on the postpartum caregiver. I have 8 hours on one day for the first 3 days, and then 3 hours for the rest of the week. How do you handle the hours?

I'm just afraid I won't find the right maternity nurse! Especially during labor!
My mom's maternity nurse really irritated me to no end. She was such a know-it-all who meddled in everything... Otherwise, it sounds nice to have someone who cleans up around the house and helps you with certain things. Since my partner plans to take a few weeks off after the birth, I've discussed with the maternity care agency that we'll use about 5 hours a day instead of 8. Also, my mom wants to come over a lot to keep the house tidy (which I'm fine with ).
