Experiences with changing a baby name

Babynaam wijzigen ervaringGuest ·
Hi,
Gave birth to our third baby four months ago. During pregnancy, I really struggled to choose between two very different names. I finally went with one, but later realized the other name would have suited our baby much better, especially in combination with the other names. I just can't get used to the fact that we chose the other name, and I've been thinking about it so much that I'm starting to dislike it more and more. Using it as a second name isn't an option.
Are there other moms who recognize this feeling? And are there moms who regretted their chosen baby name and had it changed?

Hi! I don't have any experience with this, but it sounds absolutely awful to pick a name that you end up feeling doesn't suit your child at all. I know you have to submit a request to the court for a name change. If it gets rejected, I'd suggest using the name you really want as a nickname, and keeping the other name on paper.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply!
Yeah, it’s really annoying! The name is also a completely different kind of name compared to the rest of our family names, so it doesn’t fit well either. I did look up how it works if you want to change a name, but that step feels so big. For example, birth announcements have already been sent out with this name, and it would feel weird to have to say that she now has a different name (or, if not officially changed, a different nickname). The names are completely different, even with a different initial.
I find it so hard because changing it is such a big step, and it feels strange for the people around us, but continuing to go around with this name isn’t nice either, because it’s been on my mind a lot.

I think a name does 'grow on you'. You might not find it beautiful right now, but you'll get used to it.

If you still have a strong feeling that the name absolutely doesn't fit your baby, I'd say don't wait too long with changing the name so your child can get used to it in time.

May I ask what your child is called because now I'm quite curious? If you'd rather not post it on this forum, I understand that too.

Oh, I just want to add that I think you should mainly focus on what you and your partner think, and not worry about any (negative) reactions from friends/family. Some will undoubtedly react negatively at first, but half a year later, they'll probably have something else to talk about anyway.

    Hi An1990,
    Nice that you replied!
I do want to take a little more time to look at it, and I hope the name will start to feel right. I’d rather not say the name out loud right now. At the moment, I can’t imagine being fully happy with it, but it would be nice if that feeling would grow over time. Looking back, I wouldn’t understand why we didn’t go with the other option, since that name fits better with the rest of the family’s names in terms of style.
Yeah, maybe I should try to let go of what others might think, but that’s pretty hard for me, because everyone has their own opinion and will always know that she had a different name at first.
I just hope I can forget about the other name and be happy again with the choice we made back then. I don’t see that happening right now, but who knows. During the pregnancy, I also couldn’t have predicted how I’d feel about the name now, otherwise we wouldn’t have chosen this name.

    Hi,
I just had the same problem as you.
Our little boy is now 2 months old. During the pregnancy, we also really struggled to choose between 2 names, and now I feel like we made the wrong choice.
So we're also considering changing his name, but it's definitely a big step.
Did you end up keeping the name? How do you feel about it now?
    Greetings

    Hi!
I'm curious how it's going now. Did you get used to the name or did you decide to change it anyway? I have the same situation with our third child and don't know what to do. I can't imagine getting used to the name now, but changing it feels like a big step too...

Hi Mama of 4, I get that you're doubting. I ended up keeping the name in the end. It does grow on you, even though I didn't think so at first. Sometimes you only realize after a few months that the name really fits. If you're really unsure, talk it over with your partner for a bit. Sometimes it helps to just say the other name out loud. Good luck.
