exhausted - routine and own bed?

My little boy (almost 3 months old) often sleeps in short bursts (about half an hour during the day, sometimes an hour, and at night he wakes up every two to three hours). So far, I've kept him close to me a lot (in the bassinet/carrier/co-sleeper).
But I really need more sleep, and I have no idea how to handle this when I go back to work soon.
I've been trying to establish a bit of a routine for a week now (sleep-eat-play-sleep) and letting him sleep in his own crib more often (fewer stimuli?).
But he doesn't fall asleep easily in his own crib (sometimes I spend an hour trying before he finally sleeps), even though I put him to bed when he starts getting tired. He does sleep a bit longer then.
Does anyone relate to this? How do you handle it? Any tips?

I totally get it... our daughter is almost 2 now.
She's not a good sleeper, still not. Whenever something's up, like a little ache, she sleeps poorly. So with every tooth... and we're now at the last molar.
At one point I took the pressure off.... she napped 4 times a day for 45 mins, and I spent over 15 mins just getting her to sleep each time.
So every morning during her nap we'd go for a walk in the stroller; she slept more peacefully, and I didn't feel the pressure. And in the afternoon/evening in a sling.
It took a long time, but it worked out. I think around 7 months things suddenly fell into a more regular rhythm, and the afternoon nap made sense too.
When I went back to work, my dad stayed home, so I also took the pressure off myself about having to have a perfect routine ready for him and for her to sleep amazingly. That's just not how it works.
Lots of luck... with this tough search.
