Hi Peetje42, it's so nice that you read my post and replied
That's why I'm sending a quick update!
I had a blood test today, and an hour later I got a call from the doctor. The level is still a bit too high: 2.5 (should be between 0.4 and 2), so we're increasing the dose.
But we already have the green light!!
Another check-up in six weeks...
In the meantime, we know what to do
@zonnebloem what a lucky you that you could go straight to the gynecologist. Usually, you have to try on your own for a year first On average, it takes a year, but I hope for you that you'll have a beautiful test in your hands within the year and that you'll be spared the endless waiting. Stay positive
I went to the gynecologist (back in November) after an appointment in August; I thought that was already a long wait It was mainly because I had never had a Pap smear before. From age 25, it's strongly recommended to detect cervical cancer early, and I was already 26. So it was definitely time! Since I mentioned our desire for a baby, the gynecologist suggested doing a general blood test. They check for STIs, viruses, antibodies, ... and also your thyroid levels.
So it was just by chance that we checked that, and it turned out my thyroid was acting too fast at that time. It was inflamed (as the ultrasound later showed...). After those blood results, the doctor scheduled all these tests because such things can also indicate a more serious condition, e.g., Graves'. (Since I already have an autoimmune disorder, I would be more prone to this.) But they could rule that out. They said it was purely a coincidence that we saw the fast activity, and that my thyroid would flip back to normal, or become too slow. (That was the theory.) And since the doctors were already 'moving' about this crazy TSH value of 0.001 (so, fast thyroid), they started monitoring it. A while later, it was 19 and had flipped to a much slower thyroid. Discovered by luck, fortunately!
This monitoring was done by an endocrinologist. In many cases, it indeed plays out differently. For example, if you struggle to get pregnant and then later, via a blood test, discover a thyroid issue. I hope they don't make anyone wait so long for a simple blood test! The doctor emphasized that if we did get pregnant with a poorly functioning thyroid, there's a high chance of miscarriage or later problems for the baby...
You do sometimes hear about those incredibly long waiting times at the gynecologist, but I guess I ended up 'in between' because I'd never had that first important Pap smear... A blessing in disguise, then..
@zonnebloem here they only do it from age 30, so you're lucky and it's nice that they were willing to check it out for you right away and the blood test you had back then is only done here if you've been trying for a year, so it's also nice that they were willing to check it for you right away
Hi Elvira,
Is this mainly a forum for Dutch ladies? Oops sorry, that's quite a long wait for you guys.
I had no idea about that!
A few years ago, they introduced the age limit for the test, which is then free of charge, and not long after my 25th birthday, I received an invitation letter for it... but at the time, my head was somewhere else entirely...
What does @Wondertje3 mean by wrong account?
