Strange cycle

Hi there!
I stopped taking the pill in March. Since July, we've been actively trying to conceive. My last cycle started on July 6th. Normally, my cycles always lasted 27/28 days.
This time, I suddenly got brown discharge and cramps in the night on July 28th. On July 29th, I lost as much blood as during my period.
How can my cycle suddenly become so short like this, and how do I calculate my next ovulation? (I've also started taking folic acid now.)

It takes a bit longer for some people to ovulate than for others. So I'd say your body just needs to get into a bit of a rhythm. If your cycle isn't completely regular, you could use ovulation tests; that way, you're more likely to have sex at the right time. But of course, that does take away a bit of spontaneity. So definitely keep it spontaneous and fun in bed ;-)

So could this be due to the pill?
Isn't it strange that when I stopped in March, my cycle was normal in March, April, May, and June?
And now that we've stopped using condoms, my cycle has suddenly become less than 23 days again :/
I've already bought an ovulation test for next month because I'm still worried.

It could definitely still be due to coming off the pill, but stress, heat, etc. can also throw off your cycle for a while!

But it’s nice not having to use condoms anymore. Sex without them is really much nicer, just like without the pill!

It could totally be from the pill. It cost me a short cycle for 9 months too. So take a year to get to know your body's symptoms. Write down a few things that give you some recognition of a cycle. For example, I get a bit grumpy and sleep poorly right before my period, and a few days before ovulation I have that stretchy, clear mucus.
Oh yes, the side of ovulation (left or right) can also make your cycle different!

    Hi Karen,

I was off the pill for 1.5 years and my cycles went like this (I still remember this because my doctor made me write it down): 28, 28, 29, 26, 27, 31, 34, 41, 45, 38, 29, 27, 26, 28, 31. There was no regularity, so I never ovulated on the same day every month. I was way too focused on it—ovulation tests, tracking cervical mucus, keeping an eye on stomach pain/sensitive breasts, and having forced sex because "yes, now I definitely have my ovulation" hahaha. After 1.5 years, unfortunately, my husband's grandpa passed away, so making a baby was the last thing on my mind. And guess what? Suddenly I was pregnant. Conclusion (which everyone's probably already saying): let it go, let it happen naturally, and really try not to obsess over it! I used to sit on the toilet crying every month with a negative test, and that didn't make things any cozier at home hahaha.. Lots of luck, girl, you'll make it work!

    Best, Anje!
