Unplanned pregnancy

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend is scheduled to have an abortion. We've only been together for half a year and are hesitating about the decision, mainly for practical reasons. There's little support from the municipality, and we don't have any work ourselves due to the corona crisis. We've already had a consultation with a midwife and at an abortion clinic for an information session. Are there any others in a similar situation who might have some advice?

I'm afraid no one can give advice here.. it's a tough decision to make, but indeed, kids cost a lot of money. I think it's great that you're thinking about it so realistically.
Wishing you lots of success in your decision & hopefully a nice job will come your way soon despite the corona crisis.

It’s good to see that you’re really thinking this through. Kids do cost money, indeed. But it’s also a matter of how much you want to spend. There are plenty of families living on a tight budget where children still grow up without lacking the basic necessities like a roof over your head, food/drinks, clothes, and especially love. They might not have new stuff or lots of toys, but in that sense, many of us are pretty spoiled.
You can buy a lot of baby stuff second-hand on Marktplaats or at thrift stores. You can use cloth diapers instead of disposables. If breastfeeding goes well, that’s great too because it’s free. You mentioned you don’t have jobs, which also saves on childcare.

But these are all short-term things.
What really matters is how you see the future.
The corona crisis will pass eventually.
What’s your outlook for the future? Do you want (ever) have kids?
What can you offer a child? Where do you see yourselves in 5 or 10 years? What kind of work do you expect to do? Where do you expect to live?
A child can also be extra motivation to get things in order.
    Unplanned doesn’t mean unwanted.
Whatever you decide, you can’t take it back, and you’ll carry that decision for the rest of your life. Either as a child in your arms or as a child in your heart that couldn’t come to be.
