Check-up with the gynecologist/internist

Hi ladies,

I'm currently 13 weeks pregnant. I had my blood tested last week, and it turns out I have a sluggish thyroid (value: 2.4). So I need to see the gynecologist/internist. I'm worried. I keep reading all these horror stories.

Do any of you have experience with this? What are the risks for the little one?
And what does a gynecologist do? Do they do an ultrasound? What exactly gets discussed?

Greetings from a worried mommy-to-be!

I'm also under the care of a gynecologist instead of a midwife due to blood pressure, so not the thyroid. The nice thing about all the check-ups is that I kept getting ultrasounds

    Hi Laura,

I'm pregnant too and also have a sluggish thyroid. Early on, my levels weren't well-adjusted. My values for pregnancy were a mess: TSH 86 and T4 1.5. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, my GP immediately increased my medication, which was necessary for the baby. I've also been under the care of an internist, with regular blood tests to get my levels right by adjusting the dosage. I could quickly tell when something was off, like if the dose was slightly too high (palpitations, feeling rushed). It's important to speak up early so they can do another blood test. I'm now on 112 mcg of Levothyroxine, and my levels have been good for the last three checks. After the birth, our little girl will be closely monitored, and we'll likely stay overnight in the NICU. My medication will also be adjusted postpartum.

As I understand it, the most important thing is to get your levels right as soon as possible. You can discuss all your concerns with your internist/gynecologist. That really put my mind at ease.

Wishing you a lovely pregnancy, and I hope your levels improve soon.
