After trying for a year and a half, we're going to go through the medical maze. My husband and I have an appointment soon. The doctor told my husband that a semen analysis is required. He's been searching online himself because he has to collect a sample in a cup and is really dreading it. It might be a silly question, but how does this work? Does he really have to fill the cup all by himself? He's never done this before, so is it okay if we have sex and just catch it in time in a cup? And how long does he need to abstain? Surely someone here knows all this, so I can reassure him; otherwise, he might not do it.

As far as I know, it has to be in the ZH. Maybe you can do it at home if you live nearby.
Not meant to be annoying, but this is the easiest option once you're in the medical system...maybe you should talk to him about it again and he'll see it too.

It depends on how far you live from the hospital whether you need to do it at home or at the hospital. There's a maximum time allowed from when it's collected to when it needs to be in the lab. We live about 20 minutes away by car, and my husband was allowed to collect it at home. He also had to walk through the whole hospital because the fertility clinic was all the way at the back. I thought it had to be within 2 days after my husband collected it. And then you collect it in a jar. If you're doing it at home, you need to keep the jar warm during transport, like in your clothes, so it stays at body temperature. But your doctor will explain all this in detail. My husband was also nervous about the examination, but it turned out to be okay when he had to do it. I helped lighten the mood, so to speak, but he collected it himself in the jar and brought it to the hospital.
My husband found waiting for the results really stressful. He was worried something might be wrong with him. For us, though, that wasn't the case because the issue was with me. But you get an intake session where everything is explained. And if you have any questions, write them down so you can ask them.

Thanks for your quick replies! He knows he has to do it, so there's no other way. But Sunshine, how did you get him in the mood? Does he really have to do it himself, or can we have sex and then he can grab the pot in time? Or can I help him in another way, if you know what I mean? These are pretty awkward questions to ask during the intake, but my husband thinks it's all totally fine.

At the hospital, he's alone (with some books and stuff..)

Oh really Emmy? Hihi, he was already saying that as a joke! We're driving to the hospital in 20 minutes, will that be too far? And does anyone know how much I'm allowed to help him?

Butterfly, no, you're not allowed to help... it has to be done by hand... My husband also found it really hard having to come for such a small jar... The abstinence period is usually between 2 and 3 days... My husband always had to do it at home... We live 20 minutes from the fertility clinic and had to be at the lab within an hour... At our regular hospital, we had 30 minutes to get to the lab. Are you already with the fertility service or still with the gynecologist?

That's clear then, he can probably get used to the idea. We're at the gynecologist's and we'll have a chat first, but they mentioned this is also a step in the medical maze. Thanks for your reply. So twenty minutes at home is fine, seems nicer for him too. I just told him and said I'd help him get interested. I think he's embarrassed to do it by hand, so maybe better to leave him alone?

Where he feels the most comfortable... my husband finds those clinics absolutely terrible... stand your ground in the South-Holland region because they kept us on a tight leash for a long time and gave us false hope, even though they already knew back then that my husband had azoospermia instead of referring us directly to fertility treatment...

So relatable. We've been at it for 10 months now, and I also brought up the idea of doing a sperm count test. At first, he was totally fine with it, but now that I'm seriously considering it, he doesn't really want to anymore. He thinks it's too early and believes there's nothing wrong since he already has kids. I'm now debating whether to go myself to rule out any issues on my end. Can't you order a test online and do it at home? They're obviously less reliable than a hospital test, though.

Not sure if something like that is reliable

What is it with men? Isn't just masturbating completely normal? Is it less of a big deal if his wife has to spread her legs?

My husband had the test too. We found it mostly funny and a bit embarrassing to hand in the sample. Hope it's fine soon.

I'd let your husband do it himself. Also because he feels shy. Why actually? No, sex is definitely not allowed. I think you're allowed to help him as long as it's produced by masturbation. He needs to abstain completely for 2-3 days.

We found waiting for the results quite stressful. We felt the same about my results. What if something is wrong? It really affects your femininity or masculinity.
