Possibly unexpectedly pregnant

AnnaG
I'm 27 and my cycle has always been regular. I can tell the exact day my period will start—it always happens in the evening. I've never had any bleeding between periods before. My fertile window started on July 6th and we had (protected) sex. On July 9th, I suddenly had a little light bleeding—just a few drops when wiping for a couple of hours—and since this morning (July 10th), nothing more. July 11th is my ovulation day.

I also have a bloated feeling in my lower abdomen.

My partner and I plan to start trying this autumn, so I've been reading up on getting pregnant for a while now. Could this be implantation bleeding? Or am I just randomly bleeding for no reason and not pregnant?

And if I might be pregnant, should I go get some folic acid tablets now (just in case)? I can't take a test for another 3 weeks or so...

I'm worried that I might be doing something wrong...

Reading your story, it doesn't seem very likely that you're pregnant, but of course something could have gone wrong with contraception. If it happens more often, I'd go to the GP and maybe get a smear test. And if you're unsure, just take folic acid anyway until you get your period.

Sounds like just normal bleeding that every woman can experience sometimes. You don't have implantation bleeding before ovulation, but around 7 days after.

I join moedertjuh and would like to add that you normally get your period about 14 days after ovulation, so you don’t need to wait 3 weeks to test. If you’re reading up on getting pregnant, I’d suggest rereading or picking up another book ( just kidding), because you don’t quite understand how it works yet.
The advice for folic acid is to start at least 4 weeks before you start trying to get pregnant.

Anna, have you ever had any bleeding before that wasn't related to your period? It can just happen spontaneously or after sex, but it's not always implantation; otherwise, I would have been pregnant dozens of times already. You had safe sex, what did you use?

It's true that I don't quite know how it all works yet, so I'm still reading up on what to do if/when it happens, etc. We're not even trying yet. I just got a little scared that it might have been a fluke and that I wouldn't have the right care from day 1.

I've never had bleeding that wasn't related to my period, and my cycle is very regular, which is why I was worried.

We used a condom, but we always start off cautious. My boyfriend puts it on once he feels it's almost time.

Sorry for asking this (apparently silly) question.
  6. Puck #7

That's definitely not a reliable form of contraception.

Anna, everyone is allowed to ask questions, no question is silly, don't let that reaction get to you. I hope you're pregnant now, that would be a beautiful gift. If you haven't had your period after your NOD, I'd suggest doing a test for some clarity. Otherwise, it could just be that your cycle is a bit off this time, and I wish you lots of success in getting pregnant in the future.

As for starting folic acid, the recommendation is to start 4 weeks before you want to try for pregnancy. But it's really not a disaster if you haven't done that yet. There are so many women who don't take it and have healthy babies anyway.

Hey, I see you're using condoms. I was on the pill until July 2018, then stopped, and we started using condoms until February 2019. I also had some bleeding between my periods—maybe we were too rough or something else. Wait a bit and take a test; you'll see.

Since I’ve never had such bleeding (and a bloated feeling in my uterus) in the middle of my cycle, I found it all a bit strange. And even though you all think it’s probably nothing, I went ahead and got folic acid just to be safe, and started taking it already :-) Can’t hurt, right?
  10. Puck #11

That's right, you can use it without any problems. And if you start without a condom, there's a good chance you could get pregnant from that, so I think it's pretty sensible to just start right away. Good luck if you're really going for it!

Yeah, I stopped the pill a year and a half ago, and since then we've been starting out without a condom... My wife told me you can't get pregnant from pre-cum unless the man climaxes twice in a row and doesn't pee in between. Learned something new!

We're moving in two months and wanted to start trying gradually after that, so it's definitely not unwanted, just a bit of a shock.

I had light period-like cramps for two days, and since then I've had a bloated feeling in my womb (not that it hurts or anything). So my gut says there might be something going on... But we'll wait and see! I'm taking everything I should be taking and watching my diet, so I shouldn't be doing anything wrong normally :-)

Who taught you that? There might be a smaller amount of sperm in pre-ejaculate. Whether you've orgasmed once or twice doesn't matter.

Urinating really doesn't make a difference for either the man or the woman. It doesn't affect whether you get pregnant or not.

I do find it concerning that you've been taught this. How old are you?
  13. Anonymous Guest #14

I read that you're 27. I'm actually surprised by that. There really aren't stupid questions. You should really look into how you get pregnant. Given your age, you should have known this by now. It's concerning that you were given wrong information. We learned this back in high school. I'm a bit older.

Also read up on being pregnant, giving birth, and having a baby/child. Maybe you were also given wrong information there.

We are indeed 27, and I was always told you can't get pregnant from pre-cum. Even when you Google it, it says the chance is very small, unless the man ejaculates twice in a row. Meanwhile, I've also been to the GP, and he told me the chance of getting pregnant from pre-cum is extremely small, and that urinating would flush out any sperm from the urethra.

It's true I haven't done much research yet; it's not a planned pregnancy anyway. I posted here because I didn't know what to do and didn't want to do anything wrong.

I'm taking all the precautions recommended by the GP, and I'll just take a test in a week.
  15. Anonymous Guest #16

In that regard, you're doing really well!

The chance is very small, well, it's still a chance. Assuming it's impossible and thinking you're playing it safe isn't correct. It remains a chance. Especially since you've been doing it this way for 1.5 years.

What really surprises me is that you now know you can get pregnant. So you've learned that.
  16. Moedertjuh #17

But how long do you think you've been pregnant if you're indeed unexpectedly still pregnant?
  17. Anonymous Guest #18

A few days if I read her well. She would have just been fertilized then.
  18. AnnaG started this #19

The estimated implantation was on Tuesday, so it's only been a few days.
The chance is small, but there's always a chance. I've never had a bleed that wasn't my period, let alone this bloated feeling in my womb. I've never even felt my ovulation or anything like that before. That's why I went to the GP, and she also said that the chance is definitely there, but it's small.
Anyway, I'm at least reassured that I'm taking all the precautions, and we'll see next week :-)

    I think we’ve all learned something, because Ana really got it right. And I never knew that either;

    https://www.oudersvannu.nl/zwanger-worden/hoe-zwanger-worden/zwanger-van-voorvocht/

So if he didn’t cum first (right before and didn’t pee), you can actually get pregnant from pre-cum! I think it’s useful to tell young girls that it’s possible. Those young guys under twenty usually cum after just a couple of thrusts, haha!

Good luck Anna; hope it’s a hit?
