Consultation Bureau

Hi dear, my son hit the glass of the stove with both hands last Saturday (he always has something in his hands, but not this time for 5 min...) luckily it wasn't super hot anymore, but he got a blister on 5 fingers. He had pain for about 12 hours and was comforted well with paracetamol and cuddles. Now the blisters are fading quite a bit but still visible.
Now I got scared by stories I read that parents are sometimes wrongly accused of child abuse. And although it was careless of me, it was definitely no intention!!
Tomorrow I have to go to the consultation bureau, how big is the chance that they won't believe my story and follow up further?

I don't think the chance is very high, it can happen, but geez, how annoying.

If they bring it up, you can explain it, but they’ll surely latch onto your reaction to see that it was an accident and that you feel really awful about it. From those cues, they’ll also see that it’s not child abuse.
Unfortunately, these things happen, and everyone experiences something like this at some point.

If you’re really worried about their reaction (which depends on how the pediatric nurse is, ours are very open), you can always reschedule the appointment.

Did you go to the doctor? 12 hours of pain is quite a long time.

I understand your concerns. They'll probably just believe your story, if they even see it. I don't know if you live in the Netherlands. If you do, what happens is that a report is filed with Veilig Thuis. They often pass this on to the youth care services of the municipality. Then there will be a chat. You won't be falsely accused right away. First, concerns are voiced and investigated.

If it does come up, be open and honest. Admit fault and express regret.

We once sat at the urgent care center during our holiday with our baby who was just under a year old, with burns on her hands. She had suddenly grabbed the hot grill.

When I say 12 hours, I mean he didn't feel it at all after that. He's moving around like usual. He woke up 3 times during the night but went back to sleep right after. So really, it was only pain for about 2 hours.
Yeah, I hope they just see that there's a mom here who's doing her best and wants to keep her babies safe!

That's not so bad then. How old is your baby? Haven't been to a doctor?

Don't make too much of it. So much happens. Assume that you're not harming your child, no bruises where they shouldn't be, etc. I understand your fear, but it's really not necessary. Why are you so unsure?

I’d personally tell them right away. Be open, honest, and mention right away that you’re afraid they might think it’s child abuse.
As a teacher, I appreciate it when parents are open in their communication. That’s when I can really help them!
Really...you won’t be accused right away here in NL. And accidents happen in a small corner. You’re definitely not the only one who’s experienced something like this.
    Good luck....!!
