postpartum help

Hi everyone!

Do you make use of all the maternity care hours you're entitled to?
And do you already have an idea how you plan the hours, spread out over the whole week or more in the first few days and then tapering off? Would love to hear your approach or others' experiences.

Love, Karin

We used all the hours of postpartum help and I found that really nice, but we also had a wonderful helper who took super care of us and turned the whole house upside down. Really nice!! I’d just go for the full number of hours and then you can always decide on the spot that you need fewer hours.

    Hi Karin...

I didn't use all the hours for my first pregnancy! I thought it was a bit much having a maternity helper over all day long... If you get a nice one, you're lucky! Mine was okay too... She usually came around 7:30 until about 13:00 if I remember correctly... It's been almost 5 years ago! I thought those times were fine and there was always someone around the rest of the day! My maternity helper also liked to tell me how everything should be done and that I had to stay in bed etc... I was happy when she left so I could do my own thing! But that's just me!
I'd do it the same way now!
    Good luck, love Lynn

Here for 24 hours, and that's then standard 3 hours a day... But with our 2nd kid, I just divided it up by agreement with the postpartum care worker... for fewer days... and not all hours need to come, mind you, it worked out fine;-)
With the first, I still had some extra hours... supplementary because of a few days in the hospital due to an emergency C-section where we figured out the how and what with the agency...
Both times I had 2 super nice postpartum care workers... but that 40 hours doesn't need to be hour by hour for me... I choose mother and child household doesn't need to be for me... last times my mom was around all week and now my man is also on leave all week...
From me, it wasn't really necessary but I don't dare to completely skip it either. I've noticed that you can feel terrible after a delivery and the check-ups etc. are then nice, especially if something comes up..
And what Lynn says too, even though I have a nice helper, I find it lovely to just relax with my little family afterwards without someone running around my house;-)

I’m a maternity nurse myself, and every family has different wishes regarding the hours. With most maternity care agencies, you can also agree on fewer hours while keeping the option to add more if you’re not recovering well or if the baby isn’t feeding properly, for example, starting with 24 hours and adding more if needed.

The benefit of having more hours per day is that you learn more, feel more rested, and more household tasks get done. The standard hours are 49 if you’re breastfeeding, and if you had a home birth, additional hours may apply.

(P.S. Our maternity care agency currently has a nice baby book promotion upon registration (BabyCare maternity care in the Bussum, Amersfoort, Utrecht, and The Hague area. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to mention this, but I just couldn’t resist.)
