Very restless and stretching arms and legs

Hi everyone,
My little boy is now 2 weeks old and cries every evening, becoming very restless!
He also stretches out his arms and legs.
He can't be hungry because this happens even half an hour after his bottle.
During the day, things are pretty good. He can stay calm for a short while, but it never lasts long. Then he gets super wild.
Are there other parents who have had babies with these symptoms I'm describing?
We're starting to feel quite desperate. Every evening, this misery.

Does he always do this after his bottle, or also in between? Maybe he has gas (normally you see him kicking his legs and they're very restless). Another cause could be hidden reflux. But then they often want to keep drinking and you sometimes see them swallowing again. You should write down when he cries and look at what the cause is (diaper, hunger, etc...) if it's not that. Then you should write down what he's doing exactly. And so you can find a pattern and possibly explain it to the pediatrician (if it's something else than just a crying spell)

Every baby has a crying spell anyway. Usually this is in the evening, because then they process all the things from during the day.

Hopefully you find my explanation helpful and I've explained it a bit well.

If you say it's fine during the day, does that mean his restlessness is only in the evening? With reflux, I'd think he'd normally have issues during the day too... Colic can definitely be mostly in the evening because the intestines start working more in the evening after a whole day of bottles. What you could try:
    - Make sure your baby drinks slowly enough; it should take him at least 15 to 20 minutes to finish a bottle. If he drinks too fast: adjust the teat or slightly thicken the milk
    - Adjust the milk formula for colic; there are formulas that are less taxing on little tummies, which you can easily get at the pharmacy
    - Make sure the baby definitely burps after each bottle by holding them upright
    - Infacol: it's very harmless; it turns small air bubbles in the intestines (which cause cramps) into one big 'air bubble' that's easier to burp out
    - Use Difrax bottles: the S-bottle from Difrax is good for colic

Hey, that's so tough that it's making you feel so desperate. I went through something similar with my little cousin, even though I don't have kids myself. He was on lactose-free formula for a while, and now they've slowly built him back up to regular formula, and it's going well.

What's also really important is that you both keep your own calm. If you're restless, your baby will pick up on that too. Is there maybe someone in your circle who could drop by for a little while in the evenings? Then you could go for a walk together to help calm down. Also, it's not as hard for someone else to handle a crying baby for a bit when they know they can head home after an hour

    Breathing is normal.

It could be several things. Colic or crying spells/cluster crying.

Do you think he's in pain? Pedal his legs, gently rub his tummy, or put him in a warm bath. There are plenty of remedies for colic.

For crying spells/cluster crying, accept it and make things as easy as possible for you. Cuddle together, offer a pacifier or finger.

You can also try swaddling. Read up on babies this age; from my experience, they sleep little, want lots of attention, and cry. From 3-4 months old, they can be awake more on their own, and crying often decreases.

Have you tried Pukka Baby? You might be able to borrow one from someone nearby. Probiotics for his tummy can also help reduce the symptoms. Good luck!! It sounds like colic...but I'm not a doctor, so if you're unsure or feeling desperate, always go to your GP! We also carried her in a carrier a lot in the evenings, which helped a bit and was less taxing on your posture.

Hi, I don't know if this is an old post, but my 3-week-old son has exactly the same thing. We're sometimes really desperate, especially me... He's also so restless with his arms and legs. He grunts all day long. Can't be calm for even a minute. 3 mins in the swing and he's screaming, 3 mins in the cot and he's screaming, 3 mins on my lap and he's screaming. In the bath he's screaming, he doesn't like anything! Even walking doesn't please him! Drinking from his bottle, he's restless too, he doesn't sit still for a moment, it makes you restless too. We haven't had a single moment where he lies or sits comfortably with you, only crying. We've already called the doctors and they advise, yeah, just take him for a drive and yeah, just wait and see. We're desperate.

Maybe we do have a restless baby after all.
My son really identifies with this. ????

My girl does this too, really badly! She's 6 weeks old now. I swear by the Puckababy!
I personally find it nicer than proper swaddling. The Puckababy is a bit looser so they still have some freedom of movement but they can't wake themselves up or kick.

At first they might not like it. But give it a few minutes! My girl has gotten used to it now and knows that as soon as the Puckababy goes on it's bedtime. So for her, the Puckababy now stands for calm.

She had a lot of trouble with colic and difficult stools. Nutricia Omneo Comfort really helps a lot with that!
But the squirming and stretching etc can also be because your baby is overstimulated. She suffers from that too. She's been very alert since birth (everyone noticed it right away) and takes everything in. But as small as they are, they can't process it all yet.

So what we do now; bottle, cuddle a bit, put to bed at the first sleep signal. (So not in the playpen or somewhere else. Just really her own bed or cot) Then she sometimes cries a bit more but usually falls asleep within a quarter of an hour. So apply lots of calm and routine! And as few stimuli as possible. When I feed her, the TV is off for example and sometimes I even just stay in her own room.
We do go for walks outside now and then though. But I would just try to minimize the stimuli. So create a calm environment and maybe even not (too much) give in to baby visitors (if you already did).

Once she has her rhythm down and becomes a bit calmer again, you can slowly expand the stimuli again.

My little one, who is now 2, also had a tough start.
Because he suffered from constipation, we ended up seeing an osteopath. They really helped us back then.
My little one also cried a lot for no reason, and nothing helped in those moments. He would overstretch himself, so breastfeeding wasn’t an option. The osteopath not only stimulated his tummy through massage but also taught us a lot about the different signals babies can give (and how to understand them), as well as how to handle overstretching and inconsolable crying.

And what's the way to handle overstimulation?
We also started with Omneo, you can always hear his intestines clearly and he poops a lot.
We also went to the osteopath 3 times. He told us that he has a lot of tension in his meninges..
I also often put him in his bed above, he finds more peace there!
Should I also try a Puckababy and which one is that. Does she sleep in it with this warmth and also at night?

Ri; you've got different Puckababys.. anyway you have the Piep and Mini. Piep is for 0 to 3 months and Mini for 3 to 6 months. And then you also have the standard (just cotton), Tencel/summer (so extra thin) and a thicker one for winter.

I have one on loan that I think is extra thin and I have one standard myself. She's in it now too. During the day just a diaper in it and in the evenings/night with a onesie in it. She doesn't lie under a blanket or sheet anyway (she kicks it away anyway).

I'd check Marktplaats for a bit, there are quite a few and it saves a lot of money! Those things are quite expensive new.

Thanks, I did find one on Marktplaats????
