pregnant on a long trip

Hi everyone,

I'm new here.. My name is Fema and I'm 28. My boyfriend and I have been together for a while and for quite some time now I've been having baby cravings.. my boyfriend wasn't ready for that yet so I waited patiently.. (sometimes with less patience haha).. Now we've decided to go for it.. I stopped the pill half a year ago and started taking folic acid etc. We had decided to start trying in April.. Now we've planned a vacation in August.. 3 weeks in Thailand. I had already looked up some info online but traveling while pregnant seemed doable. However, be extra careful with raw meat and dirty drinking water. That didn't seem like a problem! Now I went to get the vaccines at the GGD and told them about our desire for a child. The lady at the GGD advised me to wait at least 2 months after our trip.... this due to health/viruses and maybe malaria. (malaria is present in Northern Thailand, so we could avoid it).. I'm really doubting now. I'm going to make an appointment next week with the GP and a midwife to get advice there.. Are there any people here with experiences regarding traveling far while pregnant like Thailand? Do you have tips? I'd love to hear it. Greetings Fema.

    Hi Fema,

I've always found that a bit easier. I haven't gone as far as Thailand myself, but I have been to Turkey, Spain, and Morocco. Just be careful with dirty water and vegetables and fruit washed with it. Not too extreme though, because yes, women do get pregnant and give birth to healthy babies there too. As long as you just take good care of your own health and don't start eating weird things like raw meat, I think you'll be fine!

    Greetings

I'd only wait if there was a Zika virus outbreak, since that virus affects development. Aren't women everywhere just getting pregnant anyway?

    Hi Fema,

Great tip; ask the agency that handles the vaccinations. Zika is present in limited amounts in Thailand. It's not as severe as in South America, but it is there:

And further on, I'd always avoid malaria areas! Normally you'd use DEET, but if you're pregnant, you should never use more than 30% DEET. Finally; dengue is also present in Thailand. Last year they had quite an epidemic. It can be deadly for people, but mainly you get severe fever, which can be bad for your little one. As unfortunate as it may sound; if you're pregnant, there are quite a few risks in Thailand. Whether you want to take those risks is up to you, of course! Hopefully you'll get pregnant soon, and a holiday elsewhere can be super fun too!
