Gestational diabetes misdiagnosed

Hi everyone,

First of all, I wish you all an easy and smooth pregnancy! Hopefully, everything is going well for you and the pregnancy complaints aren't too much of a bother.

I haven't been sleeping well for weeks now, and just hearing the word "midwife" makes me want to run as far away as possible.

I'm currently 33 weeks pregnant. Baby is very welcome and expected.

The story in short:
At the 12-week blood test, my sugar level was 6.5. I know that's on the high side but not too high. I only found out about it 4 months later (which should have been communicated immediately), and I was immediately sent for a glucose tolerance test. This is a very heavy test to determine if you have pregnancy diabetes. However, I had no symptoms, wasn't in the risk group, and don't have this disease in my family. But no one even asked about that. Due to other pregnancy problems (difficulty walking, a lot of pain, a fibroid), I could only do the test at week 31, completely exhausted and stressed. The result was 9.1. So, pregnancy diabetes. A week later, I heard from the midwife that I need to prick my blood 5 times a day at home, follow a carbohydrate-free diet, and if that doesn't help, start insulin. I panicked and since then, I haven't been able to keep my emotions and fear under control. That's all I can think about.

I've been to a dietitian since then and - nothing was wrong with my diet, I didn't need to change anything.
I've been to a diabetologist and pricked my sugar for two days - all values were under 5.1.

So now it turns out that all of that was for nothing. Due to sloppy and poor guidance from the midwife, I went through that nightmare for nothing, couldn't enjoy a single day of my pregnancy, and cried for weeks. Now I can't let go of the situation. Stressed, sad, and scared... I don't want to see the midwife anymore or talk to her either, I start crying immediately because she treated me and my unborn child so coldly and unprofessionally.

I want to switch to a different midwife but don't know if that's possible and am afraid they'll be bad too...

Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation or has someone gone through this too? I just wanted to get the story out and have no one around me for this.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

I wouldn't personally call the OGTT a heavy test at all.. the drink is gross, sitting still for 2 hours is incredibly boring but otherwise....

Testing your blood sugar for 2 days and not having it above the limit says nothing. I was tested during my last pregnancy too and my values were too high after the OGTT. 8.0 where 7.8 was allowed. So I also pricked myself 5 times a day and followed a diet. I rarely went too high even though I didn't really change my eating habits much. But that doesn't mean I didn't have gestational diabetes. For example, if I ate 3 rolls instead of 2 at a time, I would definitely go over. I reacted much more strongly to carbohydrates than to "sugar" (so chocolate etc.)
These tests are not done for nothing and it can have consequences for your baby if it's not detected.

If you're having problems with your midwife now, I would look into whether you can work things out together as soon as possible or look for another one because if you don't trust her, it'll be difficult with your delivery.
