smoking and e.g.

Hi ladies,
Just a quick question: I’m not really a smoker,
but I used to smoke just one cigarette sometimes in the morning at work.
It’s not every day though.
I’m just wondering if it could be harmful since I exclusively breastfeed.
My little girl only gets breast milk, so just to clarify, it’s not every day.
But sometimes it happens that I smoke one at work.
At home, I never smoke at all, not even one.
Do you know if it could be harmful or not?

Sure, it can be harmful, and you're obviously a smoker; you smoke! Totally your choice, of course. In these times, no one needs to tell you that smoking is bad for you and your baby!

    Thanks Vivian for your reply.
I had heard somewhere that the toxic substances from a cigarette would be out of your milk after 2 hours.
But I was unsure about that, which is why I asked.
I used to smoke 2 packs a day years ago.
I quit for 6 months back then.
Then I started smoking again, but only 1 cigarette at work in the morning, nothing more, and not every day either.
And it's fine like that. I don't smoke at home, so I don't consider myself a smoker. And I don't smoke every day either.
And if I do smoke, it's just 1 in the morning at work. So you might think otherwise, but I don't consider myself a real smoker.
And yes, I'm aware of how bad smoking is.
That's why I didn't smoke a single cigarette during my pregnancies.
As soon as I knew I was pregnant.
And my kids have never seen me smoke.
    Thanks for your response.
I'll just completely avoid it during the BV too.

Yeah, super bad, indeed. It also comes out in breast milk and gives a bad taste... Good that you're not smoking now!
But whether you smoke 1 or 20 a day... someone who smokes is a smoker that's a fact.
    The risks are listed below.

Thank you so much, Sas, for the information
Oh, that’s also really bad because the taste changes to a bad taste
With this knowledge, I definitely won’t smoke.
Since I only smoke one anyway,
Can I easily quit that one too?
    Thank you so much, Sas

I ate very healthily during my pregnancy
I took vitamins throughout the whole pregnancy
    for Jasmijn, my little girl.
So I'd like to continue that now for her health.
The reason I only give breast milk is precisely for her health. So if smoking causes harm in the milk
and also makes the milk taste bad for her.
Is that enough reason for me to keep it nice and thus not do it.

No, I get it! I'm also craving a cigarette right now, haha, but well, I've been quit for 3 years now... I also think about how much better I felt without cigarettes.
It's sooo nice to smoke for a bit... but yeah, it's also so bad, right... Enjoy the pregnancy period while you can!

    Yes indeed, Sas.
And you know, luckily it's not difficult for me.
Going from 1 every now and then to just nothing is also doable.
During my pregnancies, I completely left it alone because there are such severe consequences for the baby that don't always have to be immediately visible at birth.
    But can manifest later on.
You're giving your baby weaker lungs
And making your baby more susceptible to heart and other illnesses. It's also super good for your baby that you're already on board with this.
Yes, exactly what you're saying, it's sometimes just for relaxation, to clear your head.
To not have one in a cigarette.
But good, I'm also super happy
That I can easily stay away from it for my baby.
It's nice to read that recognition
    Thanks, I'll definitely do it.
I'm really enjoying the feeding and the connection together.
You too, have a nice pregnancy
And good luck soon with your baby.
Just enjoy the connection with your baby in the belly.

Oops, no appetite, it should have been "had to be hungry"
    Mistake in the message.
    Wrote it too quickly.

    Oh okay
Sorry for the confusion, I think it's because of the echo photo, hehe
    How lovely, a spring baby
I gave birth in March, on the 24th.

Quick question, do you know if it's harmful if a child is around people who smoke? The house is always ventilated first, and they only smoke near the extractor hood. Never near the child.
  13. * #14

I wouldn't allow it, only smoking outside because the extractor hood doesn't get rid of everything and it's still indoors..
But everyone has their own choice..
  14. madelene started this #15

Sofie, the toxic substances that come out of a cigarette stay active in the space for a long time. So yeah, I'd also keep it outside. But indeed, everyone has their own choice in that.

@madelene you're right about that, you know. Don't smoke 2 hours before feeding. Of course it's not good, but you only smoke 1 and not even every day (I think that's already really impressive, wish I could do that). But I'm a maternity nurse myself, and when we're working at people's homes and the new mom smokes, we always say not to smoke 2 hours before feeding.

Hi, thanks so much! I was starting to doubt myself, but those 2 hours do make sense.
Thanks, I'm also glad I can do it this way.
You have a nice job, maternity care nurse.
