Implantation or menstruation

Hi ladies,
I have a question. My last period was on May 27th. Over the past 4 months, my cycle lengths were 36, 47, and 40 days. During the week of June 12–18, I noticed increasingly fertile mucus, and around June 17th, I had 3 days of positive ovulation tests. In the past few weeks, I’ve sometimes felt dizzy, occasionally nauseous during the day, and experienced heartburn. My breasts are still tender and sore. Last Wednesday, I also had a faint positive pregnancy test (not very clear, just a thin pink line). However, since Saturday, I’ve had light bleeding—much lighter than my usual period, but bright red. Could this still be implantation bleeding, or should I assume it’s my period? (In that case, my ovulation was probably about a week later, since the ovulation test had already turned negative.)

Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi Guest, what does a pregnancy test say at this moment? A faint line is still a line and doesn't appear for no reason.

Bleeding can be caused by many things: implantation, a burst blood vessel, your period, or a failed implantation. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a bit.

    Hi Sietske,

Thanks for your reply! I haven't taken a new test yet because I was fairly sure on Saturday that it was my period. But there was really very little blood. Only on Saturday evening did I have stomach cramps and severe lower back pain, and that's when I had the most blood; it seemed quite dark to me. Since Saturday night until today, I've had a small blood clot of clear blood every 3 to 4 hours, and almost nothing else. It seems to be almost over this afternoon.

Should I take another test tomorrow? It's possible that I'm still shedding the lining and my body is still a bit confused. Since I'm so irregular, I don't really know what to expect anyway.

Hi, what do you mean by blood clot? If there were clumps + cramps + bleeding, I'd think implantation failed. On the other hand, you could still be very pregnant and it was actually implantation.

It doesn't sound like a period at all, you're saying that yourself too, right?

    Hi Sietske,

I'm not sure what to make of clots, it's some mucus that comes with the blood and it's really only every 3 to 4 hours. Normally I lose a lot more blood and it lasts 6 to 7 days. Now it seems like it's almost over. Otherwise no real cramps anymore, just some lower back pain.

Hi Guest, it doesn't seem like you're having your period based on what you're saying.

I went through this too, and I was pregnant. If you lose blood during pregnancy, there's a 50/50% chance it's a miscarriage. If that's the case, the baby was never viable and was expelled immediately.

The fact that your breasts still feel tender is a positive sign.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I think you're looking for answers, right?

    Eleonora,
    Thanks for your reply!
I’ll just do another test tomorrow, then I’ll feel a bit more sure!
I still have a little hope, but I’m expecting it to be negative.
    I’ll let you know.

    Hi,
As expected, a negative test today.
So Saturday was the start of my new cycle, or should I expect another period?
By the end of July, I'll have been on the pill for 6 months, so things should stabilize by then, right? Hopefully, my cycle will get a bit shorter, because every time it's around 40 days, it's really not fun.

Ah, that's so frustrating! Sorry to hear that.
It took me 8.5 months - then I was pregnant .
I also had long cycles - so fewer chances .
I was irregular too, sometimes 5 days of bleeding, sometimes only 2.
So I took my temperature every morning when I woke up for about 1.5 to 2 months to get a better idea of my cycle.

    Good luck, girl!

Hi, that's really sad to hear.

I agree with what Tineke says. It's best to start tracking your temperature or use another method to find out when you're most fertile.

Thank you for your sweet replies! I hope it’ll work out in one of the next rounds! I try not to think about it too much, but it’s always there in the back of my mind

40 days is indeed a long time, I can totally imagine it's a bit frustrating. I can also really understand that you're trying to keep your mind off it, but that's hard too! I was just stuck with it in my head and could barely think of anything else Good luck, hope it works out soon

    Hi ladies,

I'm a bit unsure whether I should start a new topic or not.

I'm currently at the beginning of my fourth week of my cycle (which normally lasts 5 to 6 weeks). Today, I had a bit of brown discharge. I feel like I'm about to get my period, with some cramping pain that radiates to my back. But I'm not supposed to get my period for another week and a half or two weeks. Am I having a miscarriage now, or is this implantation? Does implantation sometimes cause pain? With my two boys, I didn't have any bleeding, not even a tiny bit like I do now. My two miscarriages started like this. And even if my cycle had jumped to 4 weeks, I'd still be 4 days early for my period. But you know, they say every pregnancy is different.

Well, I don't know anymore. Maybe you can tell me more about it.

    Love, Nynke

    @Nynke,
I’ve never experienced this myself either, Nynke, so I can’t really help you. But from what I read, it seems like you’re not entirely sure if it’s a miscarriage. Your description does match what you’ve already experienced, but as I said, I don’t know because I’ve never gone through it myself.
Maybe there are other women here who have experienced it and can tell you more. Next time, you could just create your own topic—sometimes it gets confusing with all the answers already given, and they’re not always directed at you. But yes, this one is for you! Good luck and hope it’s implantation-related then.

    Yeah,
thanks for your reply and thanks for the tip. I'll put it in a topic now.

    Hi there,
    I also have a question.
Normally, with my 40-day cycle, I’d expect my period around August 19th. But since August 9th, I’ve had brown discharge every day, and only one day of light red bleeding, which wasn’t much at all. So this doesn’t really seem like a period, and it’s been going on for almost two weeks now. Would this still count as a period, or does this sound familiar to anyone else?

Nynke..what I do know is that you can feel pretty awful from implantation.
I had this for the first time this pregnancy.. not the previous 2.. a few days of brown discharge with 1 day of light pink discharge.. then a day without, then again, and so on. For about 3 or 4 days it was also minimal though.
I thought I was going to get my period and had pulling sensations from my belly to my back like usual..
I had flu-like symptoms for 2 evenings myself but ate normally and did everything but had fever, sweating, flu-headache, so vague... and suddenly all of this was over. I looked it up and there were others with flu symptoms due to implantation..
So you can just feel awful! Or feel like you're getting your period! I turned out to be pregnant and it was indeed implantation.. it was also exactly around that time.. I believe implantation is 5 to 10 days after conception if I'm not mistaken..
A blood vessel can also be affected, causing you to lose some clear blood...
Implantation lasts a few days of bleeding and this is really just minimal.. for some it's red, for others brown.

    @Nynke,

Just throw it out there, logically speaking, complaining is part of being a woman.
And sometimes there's just NO understanding..

  18. Cin #19

Nynke 2 to 3 days approximately..
If you're breastfeeding, it can definitely take that much longer for your period to return...!
So it's quite possible that this is still messing around and will start properly soon..
It's very hard to say because menstrual cramps, implantation, maybe being pregnant—all these early symptoms kind of look alike...
And it's always okay to complain, especially with stuff like this—it's totally something that can make you feel insecure and occasionally drive you crazy;-)

    Hi Ju,
so nice that this is allowed here too. Sometimes you just need to let it out. But otherwise, things are going super well. I’m back to riding horses every day, and then you feel your muscles growing Tonight I’m going to bring the hay in, that’s real exercise. Getting healthy for the little one is going to happen. I still need to lose 13 kilos, and then I’ll have a healthy weight.

    Love, Nynke
