food from a Martino sandwich

hey ladies, i have a question.
i went to eat at my parents' place today and my mom had brought some sandwiches. but i'm crazy about a Martino sandwich. so what did my mom do? she brought a Martino sandwich for me because she doesn't know i'm pregnant. i ate the sandwich with a lot of reluctance because i know that eating raw meat isn't healthy for a pregnant woman.
now my question is whether eating a Martino sandwich just once can really do that much harm?
i'm 10 weeks pregnant now.
thanks in advance.

    Hi Anoeshka,

You really shouldn't have done that. Besides all the bacteria in there, you're at risk of a toxoplasmosis infection. Go see your GP tomorrow and get tested for it. If you are infected, you can be treated with antibiotics.

Possible effects on your baby in the first trimester are blindness, brain damage, or miscarriage. The chance isn't that big, it's actually quite small, but still get it checked and don't let them brush it off!

    Hi Ellen!!
I'm absolutely in favor of a healthy pregnancy, but the world isn't going to end..
It's the same as sushi. In Japan, they look at you double if you say that it's:
Absolutely forbidden.. they all eat it while pregnant there.
It's indeed better not to, but your baby isn't going to die from a Martino sandwich!
How often do you get infected from raw meat?
And then it also has to be exactly that sandwich and exactly now when you're pregnant...

My sister was super picky about food and everything, she even threw her cats out of the house against toxoplasmosis. Result: her son is now allergic to everything and anything, that little guy can't handle anything at all!!
You can always give your gynecologist a quick call, but to have you tested right away..
Don't get me wrong though: It's nice that you're so worried, of course!!

Hi Olivia, I don't mean it in a heavy way or anything, but there's a good test for this, so why not do it?

Hmm, something got cut off... What I really wrote was also...

Especially if you get your blood drawn on Monday, you're normally protected against any potential infection.

I'm just giving honest info. It's true that babies still get infected with toxoplasmosis every year. Japanese habits don't change that (but I get your point).

Oh no, I really didn't mean it the wrong way, it's actually good that you're providing the info that was asked for!!
Your blood is (in my case) often tested, so you might as well have it tested.

Just to be safe, get tested because there's a small chance you could pick up a bacteria that's easy to treat.

Make up an excuse next time! Next time they bring a glass of wine, if your gut says no, just say you have an upset stomach or no appetite. Put your health and your baby's first, because you'll have to do this more often in the coming weeks .

    Enjoy your pregnancy!

    I'm 4 months pregnant
    And I sometimes eat Martino
It has to be fresh though
Not kept in the fridge for more than 1 day
    Otherwise bacteria will grow.!!!

I was so careful during my pregnancy.
You can only really do it right once.
The health of such tiny little ones is already in your hands during pregnancy.
Everything you do or eat during pregnancy affects the baby, that’s how I always think.
My niece drank a glass of Bacardi in small sips and said, “I’m already 6 months along, it can’t do any harm now.”
I don’t drink any alcohol at all, except for this one glass. I thought it was reckless, but well, the baby came out fine.
    Greetings, Madelene

Sorry, the keys acted weird. I meant I thought what she did was not done, but yeah.

I hear so many different things about alcohol... That having a glass now and then doesn't matter until you're told you can't have a single drop. My partner is also very strict about this!
I didn't drink much before my pregnancy anyway, but now I don't drink at all. But occasionally indulging can't do any harm!

What is a Martino sandwich? A kind of filet americain? By the way, I read on the Nutrition Centre website that you can eat these kinds of things if you really crave them, but that you should freeze them for 2 days so all bacteria are killed. I do that with serrano ham etc., I'm so crazy about it!
  12. Liesseling #13

Linda Serrano ham is pickled and you can just eat it.
  13. Linda #14

I thought so too, but according to the Nutrition Center, pickled things aren't 100% safe. According to my doctor, we can take that with a grain of salt, so I'm just eating happily!
  14. Liesseling #15

Oh, that's actually the only thing I still enjoy. I normally only eat raw meat anyway.
