Hi everyone,

I found out last week that I'm pregnant.
Totally unexpected and unplanned, but we're really happy about it.
I'm probably around 8 weeks along, and I have my first visit with the midwife next week.
We haven't told friends and family yet because we only just found out ourselves and want to wait until after the midwife appointment. Now, the thing is, I'm going to a birthday party this Saturday, and almost everyone smokes there. It's in a really small living room (max 10 to 12m²). So I won't be able to avoid being around smoke. Should I tell them I'm pregnant and ask everyone to go outside to smoke? It feels weird because I'm visiting, and I don't want to dictate what happens in someone else's house.
I'm mostly thinking about just saying I'm sick or something and skipping it, but lying doesn't feel right either. What would you do?

Smoking or secondhand smoke is just bad. I wouldn't go near it. Definitely ask if they can go outside or maybe just not go.

I've discussed it with my partner, and he's going to call the friends we're visiting tonight. He'll let them know that we're expecting a little one and ask them to keep that in mind by smoking outside, and also ask the other guests to do the same. It feels a bit odd to tell some people already while others don't know yet, but our baby's health comes first.

I get that it's tough to tell them about it for this reason, but your baby's health comes first.

    Hopefully, they'll understand.

Yeah, and if they don’t want to adjust or you notice it doesn’t work in practice, then you can come by another time or something.

    It's indeed bad.
Because everything you breathe in, your baby automatically gets too.
If they don't show any understanding, I wouldn't go.

    Hi,

How did it go in the end?

A lot of people on the in-law side smoke.
His cousin also smoked during the pregnancy.

That I don't want to sit in the room with them...

    Sorry, something went wrong.
On the iPad I don’t see a way to edit my previous post.

But they’ll really think I’m overreacting if I don’t want to be around smoke.

How do you guys handle things like this?

At our place, the rule is that we don’t smoke.
But what about when you’re at someone else’s house?
