Great addition, Sunshine! Definitely a good idea to always Google a name first!

That's why I already wrote: the name is cheeky

Sem is really cute, my son's name is Sem too.. I'm now looking for a girl's name that goes well with it haha

Thanks for the honest feedback, everyone. Really nice. Yeah, indeed, the meaning isn't exactly top-notch. That's actually also the reason why we're still hesitating. I have an old-fashioned name that you can rhyme very easily with. I was never teased for it, but rather teased in a playful way. With Rekel, I don't think you can rhyme very easily, and kids won't know the meaning at a young age. This could prevent bullying. But still, we want our little one to have a name that doesn't make her the butt of jokes. With a male fox or dog, we wouldn't mind that so much. There are plenty of girls named Puck (goblin) and many other kids with a word as a name (Vos, Raaf), so she won't be the only one.
Apekop is certainly not a very nice term. And a creepy and brazen boy either. For now, Rekel is still in first place. But she will be followed by the names I mentioned earlier. We're still thinking about it. Anyway, thank you very much. If there's any news, I'll let you know again

    @Anne-Marie

What do you think of Sem & Lauren?

I also thought Sem was a nice name, but we have a lot of Sem's in our area.

My son is named Noah and daughter Lauren Sophie (Lauren).
I'm now 15 weeks pregnant with the third :-)

Well, I do know some rhyming words for Rekel: hekel, pekel, stekel, klepel, krekel. So there's plenty of variation for teasing. And bullying doesn't just happen in primary school; even in high school, there are popi-jopi boys and girls who can be really mean. I mainly feel sorry for the child in that case. I really don't think it's a good name.

Yeah, Vos still sounds nice and cool. I know a girl called Bloem, and even that sounds sweet. But Rekel? And for a girl too? No. I can't even imagine a girl being happy with that name. Just sad. But I'll stop teasing you guys; you have to live with it, I don't.

I don't think Rekel is beautiful. I find it sounds too harsh. I do think Rachel is a really beautiful name (pronounced as Raagol).

I get that it appeals to you; it's 'different from the usual'. But the problem with 'unusual' names is often that they make kids vulnerable to bullying. These are names that stand out, especially if a child has never heard of them before. Then, in a child's eyes, it quickly becomes a 'weird name' with all the consequences that entails. And remember, your daughter will carry that name for her whole life... Do you still think it's cool in 20 years?
But I also wanted to say: don't let other people's opinions bother you too much. With every name, there will be people who don't find it beautiful. Tastes differ, and that's a good thing. If you think Rekel is awesome, just go for it!

The meaning isn't exactly top-notch, but that's also not exactly the case for Mason (mason) and Dean (dean). I find a profession as a first name less appealing than something cheeky. But hey, everyone has their own taste and opinion, of course.
  10. ii Guest #30

The thing about Dean's meaning, I'm certainly not writing that to tease Irma, who accidentally posted her question in this thread. So don't feel hurt, Irma. It's about the question of how much to take a name's meaning into account.

No, that wasn't the intention. Can't turn back the internet is going crazy.

I think Rekel is such a cool name, and if you guys like it, go for it! My daughter is named Feike, a lot of people think it's a boy's name, but we've had lots of nice reactions to it. Just follow your heart.
I also like the other names on your list. My other daughter is named Marie!

    Hi everyone,

A day after my last post - October 15, 2015 - our daughter was born.
Her name is Rekel Josephine Marie
Rekel was born five weeks early, but she's doing really well.
We're happy we chose this name; it fits her perfectly.
My partner and I are over the moon with her.

Thank you so much for your advice. We did hesitate for a while, but you all helped us out a lot. I just wanted to let you know that Rekel has been born; I'm not sure if that's what was expected.

    Best regards and thanks again,
    Ikwordmama
