Hi Nina,
If it has to be under supervision, then it can't be any other way... I hope those kids will lose weight and that the parents get good support... How did it come to this? Well, this is a country of extremes... I think there are more kids in the Netherlands with severe overweight who aren't placed under supervision either...
What do you think about it yourself...

Hi Nina,
I did understand that help was already called in beforehand. And that these children were really too overweight. I hope they handle it properly for both the children and the parents. That both parties receive good guidance and that the children and parents get a normal feeding pattern down, so that they can form a happy family again later on.
I do agree with Ju... there are an awful lot of overweight children in the Netherlands nowadays... if all of them are put under supervision... then Youth Care will be very busy, I'm afraid.
What do you think, Nina?

Hi Nina,
If it has to be under supervision, can't it be done differently... I hope those kids lose weight and that the parents get good guidance.. How did it come to this.. But yes, this is a country of extremes... I think there are more children in the Netherlands with severe overweight who are not placed under supervision either...
What do you think yourself...

Ooh I didn't know help had already been called in beforehand Nicole, I heard it last night while my husband and I were chatting away over a nice baguette and a piece of meat... I heard the story half and thought ooh no more fuss with supervised care and chubby kids for the first time in my opinion... I don't know what's going on with society but it really starts with the parents....
We used to play more outside and didn't have a computer.... We didn't watch much TV and yes you could have sweets but mainly on Wednesday afternoon you'd get some... And if it was November 11th with Sint Maarten walking... also otherwise well but it was different because you played a lot more outside...
I think we parents nowadays think easier about ooh just leave it behind on the computer then you forget the time and your son or daughter sits there on average for too long... In my opinion, not enough fun children's programs are made either, what there is is Chinese and very aggressive... with those weird nasty eyes..
I find it empty. I watched tom and jerry and the smurfs but played mainly outside...
My son is allowed to watch TV and use the computer by me but that's limited to half an hour computer and half an hour TV on weekends he watches with us... but then only until bedtime....
I think we who are having children now need to handle things like computers and TV more wisely... Maybe there will be a good alternative in the future for things like TV and computer and playing outside will be found fun again...
Just how I think about it....

Actually, I do think it's a good learning experience.
If you have three kids with such terrible excess weight, there should be a lightbulb moment for these parents after the help that was previously offered.
The danger of excess weight seems to be underestimated; I can't even think about all the problems that excess weight can cause.
When a child is physically/mentally abused, everyone thinks it's right to request a family investigation. Personally, I see this as a form of abuse too. A child with 51 kg of excess weight shouldn't be allowed to exist like that (unless there's an underlying illness).
Of course, I sincerely hope the children will lose weight in a responsible way and reach a healthy weight under the guidance of their parents. I hope they can continue as a family later on, but first, we need to look into how this happened and what can be improved in the future.

I totally get what you mean, but this is definitely a responsibility of the parents. They (generally) do the grocery shopping and cook the meals.
I agree that schools should offer healthier options. That’s already the case at our schools.
I think people definitely know what unhealthy food does to you, but it’s mostly about convenience. Having a pizza or fries now and then. Grabbing a cookie or some chips quickly.
I agree with you on certain points, but a 6-year-old who is 17 kg overweight... No, in my opinion (for the most part) this is due to the parents because such young kids rarely go to the snack bar themselves after school... -

Hi,
I totally agree with you all. It starts with the parents. And of course, part of it also lies with the child. My little boy just loves playing outside, and of course he’s allowed to sit in front of the TV or computer, but we decide how long. Plus, luckily, I have a son who loves vegetables and fruit, and he even asks for a sweet himself. So when he’s with friends or family (grandpa’s and grandma’s), I don’t make a big deal out of it.
Sietske, I agree that they should give information at daycare centers and at primary and secondary schools to both kids and parents. And avoid unhealthy snacks in the canteens. Of course, it’s everyone’s own responsibility, but the government can definitely play a big role here.
Besides, I think it’s okay to have an unhealthy snack or a sweet now and then. But in a proper way.
Greetings -

@Lexy @Nicole It's a shame the conversation has drifted away from the original question again. I read that it's about children who are already under the supervision of youth care. That's a complex process for the parents. Is this about addressing overweight within that process? Because that varies from family to family. I'm curious what the exact purpose of this thread is.
