Second daughter on the way.
Dad is English.
Our first daughter is named Julia.
We’re looking for a name that works well in both Dutch and English. Would love your thoughts on the following names.

Other suggestions are also welcome!!

    Kate?
  2. Linda #3

Eloise. And you can shorten it to Elsie while she's still little.

Julia is a fancy name, so a combination with Beatrix or Eloïse makes more sense.

Otherwise, maybe Sarah, Diana or Elizabeth (with a Z) or Charlotte.

With a name like Julia, I'd go for Emma or Anne. Same kind of names, and both in English and Dutch.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions! I know some of these names are a bit unusual, but I don’t want a name that’s super common. We already have a Charlotte in the family, and we think Kate is too English. Elizabeth feels a bit too classic to us.
We thought Gloria was really beautiful, but it sounds too much like Julia.
Eloise reminds us a bit of my sister-in-law’s name Louise, but I think we’re leaning toward it for now.

You could use Elsie as a nickname for Eloise if that's the full name, so it doesn't clash with your sister-in-law Louise. Or is Elsie already off the table?

I think the names are quite different anyway. Gloria is a bit divine/holy, Beatrix royal, Millie American, Roxanne from the Hazes and (sorry) a bit ordinary, Odette a bit neat, Elsie old-fashioned and hip at the same time (how that works) and Eloise basically royal but much nicer than Beatrix. I know two girls named Beatrijs and Beate (around 15/16 years old and not sisters) who are called Bea as a nickname. That doesn't sound so nice to me, honestly. And so I would go for Eloise. I also like how it fits with Julia. Unless you pronounce Julia as Djoelia, then Millie fits best.

Millie is short for Millicent, but it doesn't really fit with Julia.

    Voted for Millie

If you like royal names, these might be for you ; Luana Zahria Leonore Isabella Anna Felicia Emma Estelle Elizabeth Josephine Sofia
They all appear in the royal families, both domestic and foreign.

I think Eloise is the prettiest!
What do you think of Alicia?

Yes, we pronounce it as "Djulia" because the dad is English. We're from Belgium, so we sometimes also say it in the Flemish/French way. I like that it's a name that's known in many languages. Millie finds my husband handsome, but I find it a bit childish. Just like Elsie. The idea of using Elsie as a nickname for Eloise when she's little, my husband doesn't like at all. Pfff, it's hard to agree

I'm not particularly into royal names; I didn't even know Eloise was a royal name at first, haha! Beatrix, of course, we liked that because Julia is named after my grandma, and my husband's grandma is named Beatrix. But most people indeed find the abbreviation Bea ugly.

Elizabeth feels a bit too royal and classic to me. Then I'd rather go with Beth, but that's the name of a friend's daughter. Emma and Anna feel a bit too ordinary to me.

What do you think of Doris? I like it myself, but my husband isn't convinced. Still on our list are Nina, Alice, Quinn, Flo, Emily, Marley, and even Pixie (but we were thinking of that as a funky middle name).
  13. Linda #14

I really like Doris and Pixie!!
  14. Mellanie Guest #15

Nina, Emily, and Marley are really great!
  15. ii Guest #16

Julia is considered chic in the Netherlands; Pixie or Marley really don't fit in there. Nor does Quinn (a boy's name) or the down-to-earth Doris. And the names Emma and Anne, which you find a bit too plain, do fit into the same category. Even in the English class system.
  16. ii Guest #17

England even had a Queen Anne.
  17. Hummel Guest #18

    Zara then maybe? Or Lucy?

The names you've mentioned fall into a completely different category than Julia and are considered a bit ordinary (except for Nina and Emily).
