Marley as a name??

hi everyone,
I'm facing a dilemma and would really appreciate your honest opinions. Do you have any thoughts on the name Marley for a girl?
We're of Dutch origin (my partner is even Dutch).
My partner loves it, but I'm really doubting whether it might sound too "Y" like, as if it's more American or something.

    Why? Rude
Do you pronounce it as Marly?

Everything ending in -ey falls into that category right now, like Desteney, Finley, and so on.

No, I don't think it's an "asshole" name.
By the way, I think it's a bit of putting things in boxes to label names as either "asshole" or "proper."
But anyway, that's just my opinion.
I believe the child who wears the name makes the name.
And that can be either a well-behaved child or a child from a less privileged background.

Marley is really nice! I don't think it's like that, though!

I’d spell it Marlie because some people see names ending in y or ey as girly. So I think your friend is right. Just leave out the Y!

Thanks so much for the replies. I’m also not keen on putting names in boxes, but that’s just how it goes here. Think about job applications—it’s proven that a name like Lotte gets you an interview faster than a name like Destiny. My boyfriend thinks I shouldn’t worry about it, but yeah, it just doesn’t feel right. As for spelling, I’d prefer to stick with the most common version, since I’ve been misspelling my own name my whole life.

Oh and yes, the pronunciation is indeed Marlie.. Like Bob

With a play style like Marlie's, all problems are solved. That's just a short form of Marie-Louise

I'd spell it as Marly. I really think it's a lovely name, no negative associations with it! Good luck with choosing!

I know a girl named Marlie, and I also know two dogs named Marley (probably derived from the book/movie 'Marley & Me'.
I don’t think it’s an “aso” name, but I do associate it with dogs. Marlie, on the other hand, I really like!

I think Marly is such a lovely name. Not at all "aso", just hip! (It was on my list too!)
That all names ending in -y should be considered "aso" is something we keep going on about. A bit too simplistic, don't you think!
  12. madelene #13

    Totally agree with Linda.
And it's a nice name for a young one.
    Greetings, Madelene

Well, whether you agree or not, the thing about cover letters is just true. So my advice remains: write it as Marlie; it doesn't make any difference to the sound.

No! I don't think it comes across as condescending at all. It immediately reminded me of Marly from GTST.

    Hi hi,

Thanks again so much for the replies.. I still find it really hard!
Apart from this dilemma, what has emotionally come on top, I really don't know what I want with her name.. Very relatable, I guess, but it changes almost weekly.. Since I was 19, now 32 , I've been saying that if I have a daughter I'll name her Luna (pronounced Loena) and when I was pregnant it didn't feel right at first. Not entirely unimportant, my boyfriend doesn't really like it that much either. Anyway, we went through the SVB list for another name and this was the only one he really liked. I was/am really doubting. I thought I'd just follow my gut feeling when I hear what it is, because 2 days after Marley was added we would find out.. and sure enough, the first name that came to mind when I heard we're having a girl was Marley (we both like Bob Marley's music).. But anyway, we're a few weeks further now and I keep saying Marley, but it still doesn't feel super... oooohh how hard it is, I really find it so difficult.... We really want a name that isn't very common and Luna is ranked 40 I think and we've gone through the list so many times and nothing else comes up that has the wow factor...
Now of course there's this extra dilemma, we actually like writing it like Bob, but I just asked him and he thought Marlie was also a good idea if I had a better feeling about it... but you already get it... I just don't know anymore.... I still have a few weeks :-)

By the way, is Marly a real character in GTST? Do you follow it?
  17. Linda #18

Nina from GTST is actually named Marly in real life.
Choosing a name can be tough, but there will definitely come a moment when you both feel like: This is it! For some, that realization even comes after the baby is born, once they’ve had the chance to meet them.
  18. madelene #19

I’m someone who really wants to have the name ready after the 20-week scan when we know the gender.
So that I also get the feeling that it belongs to my baby.
My husband thinks Luna pronounced as Loena is absolutely perfect, it's really in his heart.
I actually wanted to give it to our second girl already, but I didn’t want that.
    And now not yet.
After a lot of thinking, I’ve already got the names ready for both a boy and a girl.
    They’ll be French names
Now just waiting to see what it turns out to be.
I hope you guys figure it out soon.
I think your choice is a nice name.
  19. Hummel Guest #20

Yeah, it's also hard to choose because a name has to last a whole lifetime and also fit with the last name

Marlie sounds cheerful and written like that it also looks timeless.
