Name ex

XGuest ·
We've been debating our baby name for months. We'd already found a boy's name, but we're having a daughter in November.
The names we like most right now are:
Scotty
Mace
Nina
I personally like Nina the best, but it sounds too much like the name of my partner's ex (ex-wife). Her name is Irina.
My partner likes Scotty the best.
We both like Mace, but it obviously sounds like "maze" (doolhof) and doesn't sound very girly.
What now???

I hope some people want to help think about it.
    It really is a dilemma.

    Hi,

We also have a name that sounds like an ex of my partner's... (and my in-laws really still bring up all sorts of negative stories about that one all the time!!) I think I'm the only one who thinks about it... and I've put it out of my mind because I think it's a super name and we're going to give it to our girl within the next three weeks. Let your heart guide you and name her however feels right for you... the rest of the world really doesn't matter anymore...

Besides that, I think Mace is a really cool, tough name!

    Good luck with choosing!

Thanks for your replies. The issue is that we talk to her quite a lot because we co-parent my partner's son with his ex-wife.
This means we're confronted with her more often than you would be with a typical ex.
Do you still feel the same about it?

Even so, that wouldn't stop me...
If she (I mean his ex) were to make an issue out of it, that says more about her than about you, right? (I mean... people can also look for problems)...
If the name were exactly the same, I'd say that's a different story altogether, (although I wouldn't have a problem with that either). But then I can imagine that she'd have to swallow her pride and that you'd get questions or comments about it... Especially since Irina isn't a top 10 name...

But in your case, I say "go for it!"
I think Nina is also a super beautiful, cheerful, slightly headstrong name!

Once again... Good luck with your choice!

Nina, super cute name.. Just go for it, I wouldn't think of Irina when I hear the name Nina.. It's just about what you want to think of, right..

Scotty, I personally don't think much of it..
I'd change Mace to Macey.. (I think Mace suits a boy more, I guess)

The ex might actually be pleasantly surprised by the choice of Nina. It could really improve the atmosphere.

You could just ask her if she minds that the baby is getting a name that sounds a bit like hers.

Scotty (only cool if you actually come from Scotland) and Mace, I don't like at all.

Scotty and Mace, I'm not that into...
Nina, I think is much more beautiful!

Maybe Lena instead of Nina? Otherwise, Mace could be nice.

Scotty is a boy's name and indeed means: the Scot (from Scotland, so to speak). Not really recommended unless you have Scottish roots.

    Mace: a bit weird.

    I'd just go with Nina.

I really think Nina and Irina are totally different! There shouldn't be any association with the ex.. it just rhymes.. so what? Otherwise you can't choose any name at all? So just go for it! I don't like the other two names for a girl... And they're not really nice anyway.

I'd go with Nina 100%. I agree with all the previous comments: just go for it if it's your name! You really don't automatically associate Nina and Irina with each other! Good luck!
