e.g., when resuming work

Hi, on Wednesday I'll give birth to my baby and start maternity leave. I hope everything goes smoothly.
Normally I stay at home from work until my baby is 6 months old. I'd like, if possible, to breastfeed until the baby is one year old. Is it feasible to start pumping at 6 months when I return to work, or will my milk supply drop again? Or should I stay home a bit longer so that breastfeeding becomes more stable?

    Hi sweetie,

It should be doable. I also still give my 10-month-old son breast milk and I've been back at work since he was 3 months old.
You have the right to use up to 1/4 of your working hours for pumping/breastfeeding until your baby is 9 months old. I pumped and only used 1/8 of my working hours for it. I didn't notice any drop in my breast milk supply. The only thing was that one breast didn't produce much with the pump, so I left that one for my husband to empty before and after work. I pumped enough anyway for the missed feedings when I was at work.
Now I don't pump at work anymore. But the bottle during the day is also off his schedule. It's not mentioned anymore. But in the morning and evening I still give breast milk as usual. (And on my days off, often once during the day too, since he asks for it)
I found it all perfectly doable.

    Hi,

My milk supply did drop off when my daughter was 11 weeks old and I went back to work.
I managed to keep it going until 6 months, but by then my supply had really hit a low point and I stopped.

It doesn't have to be a problem, as Amy said above, but I would still recommend pumping a few times to get your baby used to a bottle. Not so much for the pumping itself, but to help your baby practice drinking from a bottle.

    Good luck in advance!

What crumb says is definitely true. Well before you start working, I'd definitely start pumping and giving bottles so that your baby and you can get used to it. By the way, there are also aids if pumping at work doesn't go so well. Special nasal spray, photo of your baby. I had a sound recording I could listen to again (crying, so good for production).

It's good to practice pumping small amounts and giving milk from a bottle a few weeks in. I started working at 3.5 months, pumping, and I gave breast milk for over a year.
