Since late December, I’ve stopped taking the contraceptive pill and quit smoking. Before that, I had just tapered off my antidepressant citalopram. Maybe a bit much all at once, but it was going well.

Until about last week. Since then, I’ve had huge grumpy spells, and that’s putting it lightly. I feel so angry and aggressive in waves that I don’t even recognize myself. I turn into a witch... I’m going crazy with myself, and at some point, I end up sobbing out of frustration because I don’t even like myself anymore and feel guilty, but the feeling won’t stop!

I started my period on Tuesday afternoon. I suspect it’s related to my cycle and that it’s some kind of PMS, but the weird thing is that I’m also suffering from it during my period. Except today. I had to do sports last night (spinning), and I really pushed myself, which made me feel great afterward. It was really a release of my aggression. I wonder if there’s still an effect from the sport today. Anyway, I now know something that helps, but that can’t always be the case, of course.

I read online that evening primrose oil helps with hormonal fluctuations and irritability, but now I’m also reading posts that it can cause miscarriages. Since my partner and I really want a baby, I don’t want to take that risk. I also read something about fish oil capsules... which apparently also helps against hormonal irritability. But I don’t really know anything for sure. I’m definitely going to see my GP tomorrow...

But I’d really like to connect with people who recognize themselves in my story. Does anyone know anything else I can do? And are those stories about evening primrose oil and fish oil true?

So relatable! I was hugely helped by a sugar-free and bread-free diet, and I took 3x3 tablets of St. John's Wort from Kruidvat. That's a MAO inhibitor and you shouldn't use it with antidepressants. It's a natural antidepressant and helps super well with mood swings. You could also try stopping bread and sugar after ovulation until your period. Good luck! It helped me. I'm off it now.

    Hi Sylvia,

Sorry for my late reply... I haven't been online for a while because of that awful moodiness and my exhaustion. I went to the GP on Friday with my complaints because I just couldn't take it anymore. I was going crazy. The conclusion: I was experiencing withdrawal symptoms from quitting smoking. Of course, hormones played a part too, they amplified the symptoms, but it really came down to "not smoking anymore." She couldn't prescribe anything for me, but she told me I should just let myself feel however I felt, accept that I felt this way, and allow myself to be angry. For some reason, that was exactly what I needed to hear; it was a huge relief. I thought I wouldn't have it that hard quitting smoking, at least not really, but my body certainly protested. Or well, protested... it just needs to get used to not having to break down all those toxic substances anymore. So it's only now that it's really sinking in how bad smoking actually is. You can hear and read about it everywhere, but it's only when you feel this awful after quitting that you realize what it has done to your body all that time. I'm doing fairly well now, two days in. I think partly thanks to the fact that I've started taking various vitamins and nutritional supplements to support my body through the withdrawal. I still have tired spells during the day, but not all day long, and I'm not constantly angry inside anymore.

Thanks again for your reply and tips. I'll keep them in mind.
