exercise / weight loss

Hi,

About two and a half years ago, I weighed around 60 kg at 1.65 m. I was happy with that, but unfortunately, it was a period when everything was going downhill for me, and I was prescribed antidepressants. It helped a lot, and I’ve been doing well for quite some time now, feeling good in my own skin. Since my partner and I are trying for a baby, I’ve been tapering off the antidepressants over the past few months, and once that went well, I also stopped contraception. That was almost four weeks ago. Unfortunately, I gained over 10 kg during the two years I was on antidepressants, and I’m now fluctuating between 71 and 73 kg. I also quit smoking a month ago.

Until about a year and a half ago, I had an office job where I sat at a computer for 40 hours a week, plus another 10 hours in the car due to travel. Now I have a job where I’m always physically active. I also ride horses regularly and do spinning once a week. Still, not a single gram has gone off.

Occasionally, I get really frustrated with my weight! I’m not exactly fat, but I’m definitely heavier than I’ve ever been. I try to accept it and I realize that if I’m lucky enough to get pregnant, I’ll likely gain some more kilos...

My partner told me that his mom asked him if I had gained weight again. She’s asked that before, and I just can’t stand it. It annoys me that she’s so focused on my weight. She doesn’t say anything to me directly, but she brings it up with my partner, and I don’t know why. She’s proud of staying quite slim for her age, and as soon as she gains even a kilo, she immediately goes on a diet. She’s also very fashion-conscious about me and often copies my style. She regularly wants to adjust my clothes, and she does adjust them. I almost get the feeling that she’s happy if I gain weight, so she can be slimmer than me later on. Okay, that’s a childish thought of mine, but it does cross my mind. I’m not even fat, but I do have a different body than I used to... and now I want to lose weight. It’s tricky when you also want to get pregnant, though. Getting pregnant is more important to me than having a slim figure, of course, but surely both are possible? Except for the pregnant belly, of course...

Kilos stick on with antidepressants, but they don’t come off as easily once you stop... especially not when you also quit smoking and are trying to conceive.

So now I really want to do something about my extra kilos... but is that even possible while trying to get pregnant, and could it harm the baby? Of course, I’m not planning to diet strictly (which wouldn’t be good for a baby anyway), but I want to cut down on sweets and move more... if that all fits into our busy lives.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, any similar experiences, tips... whatever... Just some encouraging words are always welcome

    Hey girl

That's tough, seriously! And somewhere I can kind of relate... I also ended up here for medical reasons, and what you say, getting it off is really hard! I'm not fat either, but you have a different body than you had and you don't really want that. Although part of it also comes with getting older...

That stuff with your mother-in-law is really not nice! I understand you're upset about it, seriously... it's not a competition! And even if she's slimmer, so what! That's her issue that she makes it a competition. Please don't let it get to you, girl! You're not fat... Plus, as you get older (after menopause and such), you'll naturally lose some weight anyway, because your body doesn't necessarily need the fat reserves anymore (e.g., for pregnancy). So it's not fair to compare

I might be able to give you a tip... Besides eating less sweets and moving more, it's actually important not to eat too little. The fact that you're not losing weight now might be because your metabolism has slowed down. Your body is used to the amount of food you give it. It has adapted to that. You might have started moving more (physical work), but maybe not eating more? Then your body won't burn what you eat, but rather hold onto it, because otherwise you'd get deficiencies. I had training from a coach for a while and I had to eat more!! (in a healthy way, so proteins and carbs instead of fats) and because of that I started losing weight... Strange, huh

By the way, if you really want to lose weight or eat/train responsibly during pregnancy, I recommend getting a personal trainer. They can support you and then you're sure you're not doing anything wrong with your body and your future baby Strict dieting or over-exercising is not an option anyway.

    Hopefully, you find this helpful!

    Hey Lies,

Thanks for your sweet comment! I'll definitely take your tips to heart. My boyfriend himself thinks it's all nonsense, and when I started talking about doing more sports, he was even more against it. He says he finds me incredibly attractive just the way I am, and that he'd find me less attractive if I lost 10 kg. He's not really into super skinny; he prefers a "normal" body shape with feminine curves. But yeah, it's really about how I feel in my own body, and I'd be happy to lose some weight. I've also been told more than once that I don't eat enough. I know that's bad. I often skipped breakfast too... honestly, I never really gave myself time to eat and mostly only had dinner, plus maybe a cookie during the day just to hold me over if I got really hungry. Quick and easy, but obviously a very unhealthy way of living. Since I stopped the pill, I've changed that. I now just have breakfast and lunch. It makes a difference whether you're only looking after yourself or if there might be a little life growing inside you one day. I want to start building good habits early on.

Who knows, I might wait a bit before I really start working on the kilos. First, let's see and hope that I can get pregnant, and then get down to real work after the baby arrives. For now, I'm just doing normal exercise and sticking to a healthy eating pattern...

That's so true! It's all about whether you feel good in your own skin and whether your partner is happy with you as you are, which is super I also think you should live healthily and not feel guilty if you indulge in sweets once in a while. I'm continuing like I did before and now taking a step back with exercise. After I give birth, I'll go at it more enthusiastically I'm being careful with my body for now

Hope it works out for you soon too!

Thank you so much. I'm really curious... I only stopped the pill at the end of December, and my period was supposed to be due tomorrow, but since I don't know my cycle without the pill yet, it's just a wait-and-see. The tests I've tried so far have all been negative, so I just have to wait and see if and when I get my period.

It's nice that you're pregnant. Sounds absolutely amazing! I can hardly wait. I'm 33 now and would've liked to start having kids earlier, but unfortunately, my past relationships fell apart and those guys didn't want kids yet either. Now I've been together with a guy for two years whose previous relationships also fell apart, and he's really ready for a child now. He's already 40, so we're hoping it doesn't take too long. We're not exactly young anymore for a first child, but we're totally ready
