flat head

Hi

My girl is 12 weeks old..
I regularly put her on her tummy and during the day I put her on her side in the cot where I'm with her..
But in the evening I really don't want her to sleep on her side.. She does have a bit of a flat head..
Does anyone else have this problem too..

Congrats again! Don't worry, it'll go away again. My son could only turn his head to one side because he was really stuck during birth and had a problem in his neck. Dua, he always lay on one side of his head. That became quite flat. But now he's just 2 and there's hardly anything left to see. The doctor says that it'll completely go away.

Our little boy had this too, and at 4 weeks the midwife said we had to take action right away.
So we started looking for solutions. First we tried for 2 weeks on our own.
Put the crib in a different position, took the mobile out of the bassinet, let him lie more on his tummy or side, used a side-sleeping pillow.
But I didn't realize it would make a difference.

We called a pediatric physiotherapist who checked everything and gave us some tips and tricks.
She came to our house every week for the first month.
Then every 2 weeks because things kept getting better.
At 3.5 months we had a measurement done, and the results showed that with these numbers, a helmet would be recommended.
But that's only checked at 5.5 months, so we had 2 months to work on it.
Fortunately, our little boy turned onto his tummy pretty quickly on his own, and with all the exercises etc., he didn't need a helmet after the measurement at 5.5 months.

I'd call a pediatric physiotherapist at your baby's current age.
It's free. It's covered by your basic health insurance. So it can't hurt to try.

As for the helmet, there are many opinions....

There are studies showing that flat spots will completely go away within 6 years...
Others say no and swear by helmets,
Doing what feels right is important.

But what does the pediatrician say?
