When to start using ovulation tests?

Hey ladies,

I'm wondering when you start using ovulation tests. Do you first try the old-fashioned way and the aids, or do you jump straight into using ovulation tests?

Also, I'm wondering if using ovulation tests gives you a better chance of having a boy, since you'd be having sex right around ovulation.

Love, xx

For me, it took months anyway before my period became a bit regular. Then I waited a few more months. In the end, I only started using ovulation tests after 9 months.
By timing it like that, we could 'work on it' and in the second month it was already a hit thanks to the tests.

But what do you mean by: higher chance of a boy if you 'work on it' close to ovulation?????!!!!
You always have a 50/50 chance of having a boy or a girl, how close you are to ovulation has nothing to do with it....this is really a myth I've never heard of before.

Indeed RJ. I've heard from several couples that after a while of trying, they start taking ovulation tests and get pregnant immediately. Coincidence or not, but they're all boys..

I've never heard of it, but it's good that we already have a boy's name.....

Here’s a daughter and it was also just before ovulation. It’s and remains a chance. As long as it’s healthy Congratulations on your pregnancy, Mandy.

Indeed, totally agree. It really doesn't matter to us, but we happen to already know the boy's name. We're still thinking about the girl's name.
And thanks, good luck with the second round

We first enjoyed it and had a nice, cozy time. With 2-3 times a week, it's most natural for pregnancy. After almost a year, we switched to ovulation tests. This was because it wasn't fun in bed anymore. For us, those tests didn't lead to getting pregnant faster. They gave us much more peace and clarity. When it didn't work out, it brought more sadness and frustration.

I also don't really believe that ovulation tests increase your chances of having a boy. Those tests only indicate the peak, but you still don't know exactly when the egg is released. There are always periods where more boys than girls are born. It does sound quite logical somewhere.

My mother's experience doesn't fit this theory. She had 5 girls first. They didn't use contraception but limited intercourse to many days before ovulation, with the last time being 8 days before ovulation, and she got pregnant with a boy.

If I were you, I'd first enjoy it carefree. See what your cycle does. It's a very nice but also emotional and for some, heavy period. If you start with ovulation tests right away, you'll be very involved with it from the start. But that's just my opinion. If after half a year or 9 months you still don't have clarity or can't manage to have sex 3 times a week, you can always start with ovulation tests or temperature tracking, but that's even more intense. Enjoy!

I totally agree with you, sweetie. Just take some time to see what your cycle does and enjoy the process. That's exactly what we did. Another girl I know has only been trying for two months... and she's already gone to the doctor twice for a test. The home test was negative, but she was still nervous about whether she might be pregnant, since her last period was already more than 30 days ago. Pfff, for me, it took at least five months before I figured out my cycle because I'd been on contraception for years, and my body was quite confused at first. So I'm really glad I didn't stress out so much during the whole past year!

I had the Mirena IUD for almost 2 years. Pretty quickly, my cycle was completely off. It actually took more than a year before I could make any sense of my cycle again. Not that it was very irregular, I just didn't get it—everything was so different each month. I did so many tests back then. The following year, everything changed. We started doing ovulation tests for peace of mind, and I finally got to know my cycle and body again. My cycle still wasn't how I was used to it. It used to be a neat 28 days, but now I was between 29 and 36 days. After three miscarriages that year, I was on the pill for 3 months. I feel like my cycle reset then; when I stopped, I got my period exactly 28 days later, and the following month I was pregnant with a little one! Now almost due. I really love that I became pregnant naturally and calmly.

I just wanted to share my thoughts. With my eldest daughter, I had sex very early on, like every other day from day 9 until day 14, and I got pregnant with a girl. With my second daughter, it was different; it happened later in my cycle, on days 17 and 18, and again, it was a girl.

I’m consciously not doing ovulation tests right now because we’re trying for a third child. My husband prefers not to try too hard because he says you might lose faith in your own body if you’re constantly testing. I thought there was some truth to that, so we’re doing it without all that extra stuff.

And I also think, if I got pregnant with my daughters without any help, surely I can do it now too?

I’ve been trying since October for the third one. With my second, I got pregnant much faster, within 2 months.

Good luck to everyone else who’s trying for a miracle, just like me.

    Greetings, Madelene
