12 weeks ultrasound

I had my first ultrasound at 9 weeks. My next one is at 20 weeks. But I hear a lot about the 12-week scan too. Is that really necessary? Or is that scan just to check if your baby has any syndromes, whenever you want to have it?

I just called my midwife and it's all good. If I'd had the 8-week scan, I'd have to come back at 12 weeks. At least at my midwife's.
